Nebuchadnezzar was made insane for 7 years by God and then God restored him back as ruler. God did this to humble his pride. Three times in chapter 4 it says he had to learn that God rules and he puts in power whoever He wants. In fact He puts in the basest of men. Why is America being judged with either Trump or Clinton? America pursues the Jewish Fable of messianic utopia-happiness. Christianity teaches suffering first and then glory. The Declaration of Independence basically says if your government is not making you happy you have the right and duty to abolish it. Jeremiah told the Jews to submit to Nebuchadnezzar and suffer his rule. The other prophets said not to submit.
The literal method of interpreting the bible can lead one to seek a conquering Messiah not a suffering one. Cotton Mather at the end of his life rejected the literal for the allegorical. By doing so he rejected the Puritan Hope of the Jewish Fable of a 1000 year Jewish Millennium which still is the religious cornerstone of the American experiment. Jesus' discovery that the scriptures taught the Messiah would rise on the third day reveals the allegorical method must win out. Cotton Mather wrote that those who try to restore the Jewish nation again will suffer defeat at the hands of God as Julian the Apostate did when he tried to rebuild the temple.
