The children of "Israel" head into a period of 400+ years of slavery. This happens because the new government "Pharaoh" knew nothing of Joseph and his connection to the people that he sought to enslave. The Pharaoh begins to paint the children of "Israel" in an incorrect light. Resulting in many of them accepting slave assessment of them over the years. The life lessons we learn from this passage urge us to 1. know our correct history 2. leaving a legacy that helps our children 3. Learn to view yourself as God views you not how other want to see you.
