Just because we are gospel-centred, does not make us more righteous than other Christians. Are you hearing me? If we do not understand this, we are simply repeating the mistake in Jesus’ parable. The mistake of the Pharisee is saying, “I thank God that I am not like those sinners.” The mistake of gospel-centred people is saying, “I thank God that I am not like those religious people.” The two are the same thing. Both still rely on their own righteousness rather than Christ’s perfect works on our behalf. Christ and Christ alone justified us. We don’t put our trust in our knowledge of the gospel but we put our trust in the God of the gospel who made the gospel available for us. We put our trust in Christ alone and that is how we are accepted in the sight of God.
