In this chapter, Jesus prophesied the destruction of the temple and Jerusalem with such accuracy many years before they happened. It is amazing how he can do that. But in addition to prophesying these destructions, Jesus also speaks of his second coming. He says he will return in clouds of glory and this generation will not pass away until all these things take place. But here we are 2000 years later and Jesus is yet to return. Or maybe he did and we all got left behind. And there are many faithful Bible-believing teachers who disagree on the details of this passage. They are equally committed to the authority of the Bible, equally committed to teaching the meaning of the text properly, and they flat-out disagree. Some argue that in this passage Jesus is only addressing the destruction of the temple and Jerusalem. Others argue that Jesus is only talking about the end of the world. And some argue for both. They say that in this passage Jesus addresses the imminent destruction of the temple. And in doing so, he is also giving us a preview of what is coming. So, the destruction of the temple in Jerusalem is a foreshadowing of the end of the world.

But when Jesus says that the kingdom of God is at hand, it is good news because it means that the rightful king has returned. And this king will make everything right. He will restore everything that was broken. But it does not happen instantaneously. Note that Jesus says that the kingdom of God is at hand. It means that the kingdom of God is already here. And yet it is not fully here. It’s still at hand. So, when Jesus comes into the world, the era of the kingdom of God in this world begins. But the consummation of the kingdom of God is still yet to happen. It will happen when Jesus returns in the future. We are right now living in the tension between the already-not yet of the kingdom of God.

We begin to think deeply about the different implications of the gospel in our life. And we start to develop convictions in different areas of life. But here is the problem. There are other people in the church who do not share the same conviction as us. It is very possible for those who love Jesus and grow in the gospel to have a very different strong conviction on different issues. They believe in the same gospel but the way they apply the gospel in the grey areas of life are very different. They have different convictions from each other. So how can these people who have different convictions grow together as one church?

Hebrews 22: Gospel-Shaped Life - Hebrews 13:1-16 (English)

In Romans 1, Paul tells us that the wrath of God also involves letting people indulge in their sinful appetites. The wrath of God is when God let people do whatever they want to do. So, if we live in sin and God does nothing, we should be extremely afraid. We should be extremely worried. Because that means we are not God’s children. Parents, you understand this right. When your children have their friends over to your house, and they collaborate to destroy the house together, you discipline your children. But you don’t discipline their friends. Why? Because they are not your children. You don’t spank other people’s children. You go to jail for that. Do you see? We might be in church, but if God does not discipline us, then we are not his children. We are someone else’s children. But if God disciplines us, it shows that we are his children, and he loves us. So, God’s discipline is proof that we are God’s children.

Jesus’ single offering not only saves us from our sins but also makes us perfect before God. And if we are already perfect, there is nothing we can do to make us more perfect. And this is what differentiates Christianity from every other religion in this world. Every other religion says we must do A, B, C to be perfect. But Christianity says that God has already made us perfect. This is why the heartbeat of Christianity is not good advice but good news, the gospel. It is not about something that we must do but about something that God has done for us.

Why do we find it hard to confront others? Because we don’t want people to be disappointed in us. We want them to think well of us. Or let’s look at the opposite. Why do we love to confront others even we should not? It is because we need to prove that we are right. But why? Why this constant need to prove ourselves? Why is it that some of us are so concerned with our looks that even gaining a few kilograms makes us feel ugly? Here is why. Because deep inside of us, we know there is something wrong with us. There is a sense of condemnation that we can’t shake. We have a dirty conscience. We have an internal sense that we have fallen short of God’s standard, and it resulted in a condemning conscience. Our conscience condemns us and makes us feel unacceptable before God. It tells us that we are not worthy. It drives us away from God rather than closer to God. And what we need is a clean conscience to draw near to God.

And that is the function of a priest in the Old Testament. The people of God realized that they were dirty before God, and they needed someone to represent them before God. They instinctively knew they needed a mediator between them and the holy God. They needed a priest. And the author of Hebrews is telling us that Jesus is the perfect high priest that we need. And he will not only argue that Jesus is the high priest that we need but also that Jesus’s priesthood is better than the Levitical priesthood in the Old Testament.

This story is not your typical Hollywood love story where the good-looking guy meets a good-looking girl and fall in love. What we have is an old man, a Moabite widow, and a noisy mother-in-law. And we know nothing about their appearances. But we know a lot about their characters. Naomi risks everything in her family to put Ruth in that position. Ruth is risking her reputation and her future. Boaz is risking his reputation in declaring his desire to marry a Moabite woman. In this story, we see how each character risks everything for the sake of the other person. And they have no idea how things going to turn out. That is chesed. And ultimately, this story is not about Boaz, Ruth or Naomi. This story points to the real love story. This story is about God’s covenant love for his people.

When we move to Moab, there is a season where everything seems to go our way. But when that season is over, tragedy after tragedy continues to hit us and knock us out. And not all of them might be our fault. The story seems to suggest that moving to Moab is Elimelech’s decision and not Naomi. But one thing we do know is that sin will always drag us to the lowest point of our lives. Sin never delivers on its promises. Sin always promises us one million dollars, but only delivers us one cent. And yet we continue to choose Moab over Bethlehem. And some of us might experience what Naomi experiences right now. You might be at rock bottom. Things could not go any worse for you. If that’s you, I have good news for you. There is bread in Bethlehem. You don’t have to stay in Moab. God is calling you to come back home tonight. You might have lost everything in Moab but that is not the end of your story. Moab is not God’s last word for you. Grace is always God’s last word.

For Paul, salvation is only by grace alone through faith alone in Christ alone. No addition. Jesus is enough. Full stop. For Paul, the gospel formula looks like this. Jesus + nothing = Everything. Jesus + something = Nothing. The moment we add anything to the gospel, we lose the gospel. The moment we add anything to the perfect work of Christ, it is no longer perfect. In fact, it destroys the perfect work of Christ. This is the way Paul puts it. Galatians 2:21 – I do not nullify the grace of God, for if righteousness were through the law, then Christ died for no purpose. If there is anything we can do to earn our salvation, then Christ died for no purpose. Salvation is either by grace alone or human effort alone. There cannot be any mixture between the two.

D.A. Carson says that if you want to embarrass most Christians, ask them how’s their personal prayer life. And let me put my hands up. I am inconsistent in my prayer life. I love reading and studying. I can spend long hours every day to study the Bible. But praying? That’s a big struggle. How many of you are struggling in your personal prayer life? The question is, why? We know that we ought to pray but why are we struggling to pray? I think there are many reasons why we struggle to pray. But let me just zoom in on one today. And I think this is the most basic one. We struggle to pray because we do not think that prayer work. I mean, there are times that we pray, and it works. We get what we prayed for and it is exciting. But there are also many times when we pray, and nothing happens. And there are times that we do not pray for the thing that we should pray for and it happens anyway. And because of it, we are not sure if prayer actually works.

Yet singleness is often demeaned in the church today. And I want to correct that. Even though I’m speaking from my own experience, some of you might have to go through a similar experience in the future. There is no guarantee that all of you will be married in the next few years. Unless you have the gospel view of a single life, it’s easy to lose focus and lose hope in what God is doing in and through your singleness.

According to Paul, there is a direct connection between a marriage relationship and a relationship with Christ. Marriage is not only about the relationship between husband and wife, but it is also about the relationship between Christ and us. With another word, there are some things we would not understand about marriage unless we look at it through the lens of our relationship with Christ, and there are some things we would not understand about our relationship with Christ unless we look at it through the lens of marriage. There are two sides. You can’t completely understand one without understanding the other.

Someone has to lead and the other has to follow. You cannot have two people trying to lead. The dance won’t work. And in the gospel dance of marriage, husbands are called to lead the dance. But listen ladies. Even though the weight of responsibility to lead is given to men, unless women decided to play their part, there is no gospel dance. A man cannot lead a woman who does not want to be led. This is why every time Paul speaks on the issue of husbands and wives, he always speaks to the wives first. Yes, the main responsibility lies with men. But get this. No man can lead a woman who refused to be led.

Notice that these verses are addressed to husbands. Husbands, these verses are especially for you. Single men, what Paul says to the husbands is what you should start working and prepare yourself for when you enter a marriage relationship. So, these verses apply to all men. And we get our cue from Jesus. We don’t look to any other relationship gurus out there. We look to Jesus and we learn from Jesus. He is our role model. The way Christ loves his church ought to be a picture of how our relationship looks like with our wives.
