The Faith Test (Genesis 22:1-14)

1) First Thoughts
a. Tests – welcomed vs. unwelcomed.
b. Genesis 22 records a major (unanticipated) test of Abraham’s faith, an opportunity to demonstrate the lessons of faith he had learned over the years of following the Lord. God provided a foreshadowing of the greatest gift our world has ever known.
2) Understand the Context
a. The lives of Abraham and Sarah (Genesis 12 -21) serve to teach us about God’s trustworthiness and to deepen our faith. Little did they know a great test of faith involving Isaac was still to come.
3) Explore the Text
a. The Test Presented (22:1-2)
i. There hath no temptation taken you but such as is common to man: but God is faithful, who will not suffer you to be tempted above that ye are able; but will with the temptation also make a way to escape, that ye may be able to bear it. ~ I Corinthians 10:13
b. The Test Preparation (22:3-8)
i. Wherein ye greatly rejoice, though now for a season, if need be, ye are in heaviness through manifold temptations:
That the trial of your faith, being much more precious than of gold that perisheth, though it be tried with fire, might be found unto praise and honour and glory at the appearing of Jesus Christ: ~ I Pet 1:6-7
c. The Test Passed (22:9-12)
i. See the connection between Abraham’s faith and the actions he took in his willingness to sacrifice his son Isaac.
ii. “came to the place” – How about you?
d. The Test Provision (22:13-14)
i. God provided a substitute for us. He provided His Son as a sacrifice for our sins on Mount Calvary.
4) In My Context/Memory Verse:
a. And Abraham said, My son, God will provide himself a lamb for a burnt offering: so they went both of them together. ~ Genesis 22:8
