As we come to the end of our study in 1 Kings, we come to a story that is centered on a vineyard in Jezreel in the northern kingdom of Israel. King Ahab had a palace in Jezreel as well as a palace in Samaria. It just so happened that next to his palace in Jezreel was a vineyard which was owned by a man named Naboth. Whenever Ahab came out of his palace in Jezreel he would see this beautiful vineyard and finally decided that he had to have it. The problem, of course, was that it wasn't his; it belonged to Naboth. 
 
Ahab's offer to Naboth was fair and reasonable. Naboth could either have a better vineyard in another location or he could have the price of it in money. 
 
What he hadn't counted on, however, was that Naboth was a man of biblical principle. He was a man of integrity. Naboth simply would not sell the land for any price because the land belonged to God and the Lord had told Israel that their inheritance should never be sold. He simply would not give Ahab the inheritance of his fathes. 
 
As the story unfolds, there is so much practical application for each one of us. We can learn from the example of Naboth. We can learn what not to do from watching Ahab and Jezebel. And we can learn from God as he reveals the principles of his Word for all of us.

The Lord Condemns Ahab 
1Ki 21:17 Then the word of the LORD came to Elijah the Tishbite, saying, 
1Ki 21:18 "Arise, go down to meet Ahab king of Israel, who lives in Samaria. There he is, in the vineyard of Naboth, where he has gone down to take possession of it. 
1Ki 21:19 You shall speak to him, saying, 'Thus says the LORD: "Have you murdered and also taken possession?" ' And you shall speak to him, saying, 'Thus says the LORD: "In the place where dogs licked the blood of Naboth, dogs shall lick your blood, even yours." ' " 
1Ki 21:20 So Ahab said to Elijah, "Have you found me, O my enemy?" And he answered, "I have found you, because you have sold yourself to do evil in the sight of the LORD: 
1Ki 21:21 'Behold, I will bring calamity on you. I will take away your posterity, and will cut off from Ahab every male in Israel, both bond and free. 
1Ki 21:22 I will make your house like the house of Jeroboam the son of Nebat, and like the house of Baasha the son of Ahijah, because of the provocation with which you have provoked Me to anger, and made Israel sin.' 
1Ki 21:23 And concerning Jezebel the LORD also spoke, saying, 'The dogs shall eat Jezebel by the wall of Jezreel.' 
1Ki 21:24 The dogs shall eat whoever belongs to Ahab and dies in the city, and the birds of the air shall eat whoever dies in the field." 
Ahab's Repentance 
1Ki 21:25 But there was no one like Ahab who sold himself to do wickedness in the sight of the LORD, because Jezebel his wife stirred him up. 
1Ki 21:26 And he behaved very abominably in following idols, according to all that the Amorites had done, whom the LORD had cast out before the children of Israel. 
1Ki 21:27 So it was, when Ahab heard those words, that he tore his clothes and put sackcloth on his body, and fasted and lay in sackcloth, and went about mourning. 
1Ki 21:28 And the word of the LORD came to Elijah the Tishbite, saying, 
1Ki 21:29 "See how Ahab has humbled himself before Me? Because he has humbled himself before Me, I will not bring the calamity in his days. In the days of his son I will bring the calamity on his house."

Ahab was more wicked than any other king of Israel, but when he repented in deep humility, God took notice and reduce his punishment. "He sold himself to do evil." King Ahab's wicked heart  eventually caused his soul to be mortgaged piece by piece and bit by bit to evil. We can do the same when we begin to compromise here and compromise there; this begins in the heart. The Word of the LORD brought judgement against this. How does King Ahab respond?
