As we study the book of Judges, we see a pattern emerging. The generation of Joshua died out. That generation served the Lord because they had seen all the great work which the Lord had done for Israel. But another generation arose after them; a generation that did not know the Lord, nor had they seen the work which He had done for Israel. 
 Therefore, their hearts turned away from following after God and turned toward the gods of the world. The result was predictable. They lost their strength spiritually, and so they lost their strength nationally. Then they would cry out to the Lord and the Lord would send a deliver, a judge, to save the people from their oppression. 
 The amazing thing is that this pattern would be repeated over and over for more than 250 years. The people would follow after the Lord as long as their deliverer was leading them, but when that judge would die, the people would again allow their hearts to go back to the gods of the world. 
 Last week, we were studying Judges chapter 6 where the nation of Israel was being oppressed by the Midianites. We also met a young man named Gideon who was threshing wheat in a winepress. He was then greeted by an angel of the Lord, really it was an appearance of Christ in the Old Testament, who greeted him with the amazing greeting, "The Lord is with you, oh valiant warrior." But God was addressing him as he would become, because at that moment he was certainly not a valiant warrior. 
 But then we see that transition, as the Spirit of the Lord came upon Gideon and he called the tribes near the region of Galilee to come up with him. Here in chapter 7, we see how the Lord uses a man of spiritual strength to bring about victory.

Song # 1071 from Our Gospel In Song Collection by Col Johnston. The Book of Judges tells us that The Angel of the Lord appeared to Gideon and said "The Lord is with you, mighty warrior" (Judges 6:12). Chapter 7 tells us how Gideon defeated the Midianites with the Lord's help. 
Gideon and all his men camped at the spring of Harod. The camp of Midian was north of them in the valley near the hill of Moreh (Judges 7:1). The Lord said to Gideon "You have too many men for me to deliver Midian into their hands. In order that Israel may not boast against me that their own strength has saved her" (Judges 7:2), "announce now to the people 'Anyone who trembles with fear may turn back and leave Mount Gilead.'" So twenty two thousand men left, while ten thousand remained (Judges 7:3). But the Lord said to Gideon "There are still too many men. Take them down to the water, and I will sift them out for you there (Judges 7:4). So Gideon took the men down to the water. There the Lord told him "Separate those who lap the water with their tongues like a dog from those who kneel to drink" (Judges 7:5). Three hundred men lapped with their hands to their mouths. All the rest got down on their knees to drink (Judges 7:6). The Lord said to Gideon "With the three hundred men that lapped I will save you and give the Midianites into your hands. Let all the other men go, each to his own place" (Judges 7:7). 
Dividing the three hundred men into three companies, Gideon placed trumpets and empty jars in the hands of all of them, with torches inside (Judges 7:16). "Watch me" he told them. Follow my lead. When I get to the edge of the camp, do exactly as I do" (Judges 7:17). Gideon and the hundred men with him reached the edge of the camp. They blew their trumpets and broke the jars that were in their hands (Judges 7:19). They shouted "A sword for the Lord and Gideon!" (Judges 7:20). When the three hundred trumpets sounded, the Lord caused the men throughout the Midianite camp to turn on each other with their swords and the Midianite army fled (Judges 7:22). 
Thought for today: our salvation is secure, because God's word is true. 
Thought for the future: God is our peace, when we have peace with God. Where will you spend your eternity?

Jdg 7:9 And it came to pass the same night, that the LORD said unto him, Arise, get thee down unto the host; for I have delivered it into thine hand. 
Jdg 7:10 But if thou fear to go down, go thou with Phurah thy servant down to the host: 
Jdg 7:11 And thou shalt hear what they say; and afterward shall thine hands be strengthened to go down unto the host. Then went he down with Phurah his servant unto the outside of the armed men that were in the host. 
Jdg 7:12 And the Midianites and the Amalekites and all the children of the east lay along in the valley like grasshoppers for multitude; and their camels were without number, as the sand by the sea side for multitude. 
Jdg 7:13 And when Gideon was come, behold, there was a man that told a dream unto his fellow, and said, Behold, I dreamed a dream, and, lo, a cake of barley bread tumbled into the host of Midian, and came unto a tent, and smote it that it fell, and overturned it, that the tent lay along. 
Jdg 7:14 And his fellow answered and said, This is nothing else save the sword of Gideon the son of Joash, a man of Israel: for into his hand hath God delivered Midian, and all the host. 
Jdg 7:15 And it was so, when Gideon heard the telling of the dream, and the interpretation thereof, that he worshipped, and returned into the host of Israel, and said, Arise; for the LORD hath delivered into your hand the host of Midian. 
Jdg 7:16 And he divided the three hundred men into three companies, and he put a trumpet in every man's hand, with empty pitchers, and lamps within the pitchers. 
Jdg 7:17 And he said unto them, Look on me, and do likewise: and, behold, when I come to the outside of the camp, it shall be that, as I do, so shall ye do. 
Jdg 7:18 When I blow with a trumpet, I and all that are with me, then blow ye the trumpets also on every side of all the camp, and say, The sword of the LORD, and of Gideon. 
Gideon Defeats Midian 
Jdg 7:19 So Gideon, and the hundred men that were with him, came unto the outside of the camp in the beginning of the middle watch; and they had but newly set the watch: and they blew the trumpets, and brake the pitchers that were in their hands. 
Jdg 7:20 And the three companies blew the trumpets, and brake the pitchers, and held the lamps in their left hands, and the trumpets in their right hands to blow withal: and they cried, The sword of the LORD, and of Gideon. 
Jdg 7:21 And they stood every man in his place round about the camp: and all the host ran, and cried, and fled.

As God becomes our source of identity, we are able then to align with His detailed 
design for our lives. The victories in our lives are found on the other side of obedience 
to Him.

Judges 7:9-12 (NLT) 
That night the LORD said, “Get up! Go down into the Midianite camp, for I have given you 
victory over them! But if you are afraid to attack, go down to the camp with your servant 
Purah. Listen to what the Midianites are saying, and you will be greatly encouraged. Then you 
will be eager to attack.” So, Gideon took Purah and went down to the edge of the enemy 
camp. The armies of Midian, Amalek, and the people of the east had settled in the valley like a 
swarm of locusts. Their camels were like grains of sand on the seashore—too many to count! 
 
1. Being honest and real with God sets us up for Him to reveal His plan that leads to 
victory. 
 
Judges 7:15 (NLT) 
When Gideon heard the dream and its interpretation, he bowed in worship before the LORD. 
Then he returned to the Israelite camp and shouted, “Get up! For the LORD has given you 
victory over the Midianite hordes!” 
 
2. Worship and acknowledging God is a precursor to victory. This is how we align 
ourselves with His plan and prepare our hearts for the battle that is to come. 
 
Judges 7:19-20 (NLT) 
It was just after midnight, after the changing of the guard, when Gideon and the 100 men with 
him reached the edge of the Midianite camp. Suddenly, they blew the rams’ horns and broke 
their clay jars. Then all three groups blew their horns and broke their jars. They held the 
blazing torches in their left hands and the horns in their right hands, and they all shouted, “A 
sword for the LORD and for Gideon!” 
 
3. Obedience is the weapon that leads to the victory. 
 
Judges 7:21 (NLT) 
Each man stood at his position around the camp and watched as all the Midianites rushed 
around in a panic, shouting as they ran to escape. 
 
4. There is no battle impossible for God. When we hear Him and obey, we will walk in 
victory!

Then Jerubbaal (that is, Gideon) and all the people who were with him rose early and encamped beside the well of Harod, so that the camp of the Midianites was on the north side of them by the hill of Moreh in the valley. 
 
2 And the Lord said to Gideon, “The people who are with you are too many for Me to give the Midianites into their hands, lest Israel claim glory for itself against Me, saying, ‘My own hand has saved me.’ 3 Now therefore, proclaim in the hearing of the people, saying, ‘Whoever is fearful and afraid, let him turn and depart at once from Mount Gilead.’ ” And twenty-two thousand of the people returned, and ten thousand remained. 
 
4 But the Lord said to Gideon, “The people are still too many; bring them down to the water, and I will test them for you there. Then it will be, that of whom I say to you, ‘This one shall go with you,’ the same shall go with you; and of whomever I say to you, ‘This one shall not go with you,’ the same shall not go.” 5 So he brought the people down to the water. And the Lord said to Gideon, “Everyone who laps from the water with his tongue, as a dog laps, you shall set apart by himself; likewise everyone who gets down on his knees to drink.” 6 And the number of those who lapped, putting their hand to their mouth, was three hundred men; but all the rest of the people got down on their knees to drink water. 7 Then the Lord said to Gideon, “By the three hundred men who lapped I will save you, and deliver the Midianites into your hand. Let all the other people go, every man to his [a]place.” 8 So the people took provisions and their trumpets in their hands. And he sent away all the rest of Israel, every man to his tent, and retained those three hundred men. Now the camp of Midian was below him in the valley. 
 
9 It happened on the same night that the Lord said to him, “Arise, go down against the camp, for I have delivered it into your hand. 10 But if you are afraid to go down, go down to the camp with Purah your servant, 11 and you shall hear what they say; and afterward [b]your hands shall be strengthened to go down against the camp.” Then he went down with Purah his servant to the outpost of the armed men who were in the camp. 12 Now the Midianites and Amalekites, all the people of the East, were lying in the valley as numerous as locusts; and their camels were [c]without number, as the sand by the seashore in multitude. 
 
13 And when Gideon had come, there was a man telling a dream to his companion. He said, “I have had a dream: To my surprise, a loaf of barley bread tumbled into the camp of Midian; it came to a tent and struck it so that it fell and overturned, and the tent collapsed.” 
 
14 Then his companion answered and said, “This is nothing else but the sword of Gideon the son of Joash, a man of Israel! Into his hand God has delivered Midian and the whole camp.” 
 
15 And so it was, when Gideon heard the telling of the dream and its interpretation, that he worshiped. 19 So Gideon and the hundred men who were with him came to the outpost of the camp at the beginning of the middle watch, just as they had posted the watch; and they blew the trumpets and broke the pitchers that were in their hands. 20 Then the three companies blew the trumpets and broke the pitchers—they held the torches in their left hands and the trumpets in their right hands for blowing—and they cried, “The sword of the Lord and of Gideon!” 21 And every man stood in his place all around the camp; and the whole army ran and cried out and fled. 22 When the three hundred blew the trumpets, the Lord set every man’s sword against his companion throughout the whole camp; and the army fled to [d]Beth Acacia, toward Zererah, as far as the border of Abel Meholah, by Tabbath. 
 
23 And the men of Israel gathered together from Naphtali, Asher, and all Manasseh, and pursued the Midianites. 
 
24 Then Gideon sent messengers throughout all the mountains of Ephraim, saying, “Come down against the Midianites, and seize from them the watering places as far as Beth Barah and the Jordan.” Then all the men of Ephraim gathered together and seized the watering places as far as Beth Barah and the Jordan. 25 And they captured two princes of the Midianites, Oreb and Zeeb. They killed Oreb at the rock of Oreb, and Zeeb they killed at the winepress of Zeeb. They pursued Midian and brought the heads of Oreb and Zeeb to Gideon on the other side of the Jordan.

Then Jerubbaal (that is, Gideon) and all the people who were with him rose early and encamped beside the well of Harod, so that the camp of the Midianites was on the north side of them by the hill of Moreh in the valley.

2 And the Lord said to Gideon, “The people who are with you are too many for Me to give the Midianites into their hands, lest Israel claim glory for itself against Me, saying, ‘My own hand has saved me.’ 3 Now therefore, proclaim in the hearing of the people, saying, ‘Whoever is fearful and afraid, let him turn and depart at once from Mount Gilead.’ ” And twenty-two thousand of the people returned, and ten thousand remained.

4 But the Lord said to Gideon, “The people are still too many; bring them down to the water, and I will test them for you there. Then it will be, that of whom I say to you, ‘This one shall go with you,’ the same shall go with you; and of whomever I say to you, ‘This one shall not go with you,’ the same shall not go.” 5 So he brought the people do

1 Samuel 14:6 - Jonathan said to the young man who carried his armor, "Come, let us go over to the garrison of these uncircumcised. It may be that the Lord will work for us, for nothing can hinder the Lord from saving by many or by few." 
 
In any battle, our confidence is ultimately to be in God alone, and not in anyone or anything else. 
 
Judges 6:15-16 - And he said to him, "Please, Lord, how can I save Israel? Behold, my clan is the weakest in Manasseh, and I am the least in my father's house." And the Lord said to him, "But I will be with you, and you shall strike the Midianites as one man." 
 
Even in our weakness, God is able to fight our battles even before they begin. 
 
2 Corinthians 4:6-7 - For God, who said, "Let light shine out of darkness," has shone in our hearts to give the light of the knowledge of the glory of God in the face of Jesus Christ. But we have this treasure in jars of clay, to show that the surpassing power belongs to God and not to us. 
 
Sometimes God's plans may not make sense to us, but when we trust Him, He is faithful.
