Hagar and Ishmael Not Forgotten, Genesis 21:8-21, January 9, 2021, Sunday school lesson (Int)

Jesus said unto him, thou shalt love the Lord thy God with all thy heart, and with all thy soul, and with all thy mind. This is the first and great commandment. And the second is like unto it, thou shalt love thy neighbour as thyself. (Matt 22:36-39)

Put your hope and faith in Jesus Christ. We have all sinned and transgressed the 10 Commandments. The wages of sin is death, but the gift of God is eternal life through Jesus Christ. God Himself came into this world to offer us this free gift by making payment for our sins through his death and resurrection. Turn from the ways of this world, Repent (turn from) your sins, and put your faith and trust in Jesus Christ.

This world will likely soon erupt into chaos.  And down the line, Satan will pose as a savior- perhaps (as crazy as it sounds) posing as an alien being from a distant planet, uniting all religions. His promises of a better world will sound realistic. Don't fall for it. Aliens are fallen angels or demons.

Having a personal relationship with God is totally dependent on your birth. That may seem like a strange statement on the surface, but it is true nonetheless. In fact, Jesus said, “…unless one is born again he cannot see the kingdom of God” (John 3:3b). To have a covenant relationship with God, you must be born again; that is, you must be made brand new by the powerful working of God through His Holy Spirit, which happens as you place your faith and trust in the Lord Jesus Christ. 
 
A covenant relationship with God is attained only through spiritual birth. It has been that way from the beginning. That truth is understood clearly in Genesis 21:8-21, where Ishmael, the son of an illegitimate fleshly relationship, is banished from Abraham’s home and inheritance. Isaac, the son who was promised to Abraham by God, was the son of legitimate spiritual birth, and so he maintained his position in the home as the rightful heir of all that belonged to Abraham, including the covenant promises from God. 
 
There’s a lot to explain here, and that is the burden of the sermon below. Text: Genesis 21:8-21 
“(8) And the child grew and was weaned. And Abraham made a great feast on the day that Isaac was weaned. (9) But Sarah saw the son of Hagar the Egyptian, who she had borne to Abraham, laughing. (10) So she said Abraham, “Cast out this slave woman with her son, for the son of this slave woman shall not be heir with my son Isaac.” (11) And the thing was very displeasing to Abraham on account of his son. (12) But God said to Abraham, “Be not displeased because of the boy and because of your slave woman. Whatever Sarah says to you, do as she tells you, for through Isaac shall your offspring be named. (13) And I will make a nation of the son of the slave woman also, because he is your offspring.” (14) So Abraham rose early in the morning and took bread and a skin of water and gave it to Hagar, putting it on her shoulder, along with the child, and sent her away. And she departed and wandered in the wilderness of Beersheba. 
 (15) When the water in the skin was gone, she put the child under one of the bushes. (16) Then she went and sat down opposite him a good way off, about the distance of a bowshot, for she said, “Let me not look on the death of the child.” And as she sat opposite him, she lifted up her voice and wept. (17) And God heard the voice of the boy, and the angel of God called to Hagar from heaven and said to her, “What troubles you, Hagar? Fear not, for God has heard the voice of the boy where he is. (18) Up! Lift up the boy, and hold him fast with your hand, for I will make him into a great nation.” (19) Then God opened her eyes, and she saw a well of water. And she went and filled the skin with water and gave the boy a drink. (20) And God was with the boy, and he grew up. He lived in the wilderness and became an expert with the bow. (21) He lived in the wilderness of Paran, and his mother took a wife for him from the land of Egypt.”

Injustice and Hope - Genesis 21:8-20 Standard Lesson Commentary 
Staying faithful when everything is going well for us is easy. But staying faithful to God in turbulent times, as we find Abraham doing in our lesson this week is hard. His wife and her handmaid were quarreling with each other, and Abraham’s heart was torn between the two sons he had, Ishmael and Isaac. Our lesson this week shows how God can use strife-ridden situations and turn them around for any chosen and faithful person. Abraham is that person in our lesson. 
PRACTICAL POINTS FOR DISCUSSION: 
1. God can use any of our emotions to complete His plans, even anger (Genesis 21:8-10). 
2. Serving God in obedience does not mean we won’t show normal emotions (Genesis 21:11-13). 
3. God’s will often requires doing the hard thing and leaving the results to Him (Genesis 21:14). 
4. Being under God’s protection does not guarantee the absence of suffering (Genesis 21:15-16). 
5. God answers those who cry out to Him and rescues them in His time and in His way (Genesis 21:17-18). 
6. God remembers and keeps His promises even when men do not remember them (Genesis 21:19-20; see also Genesis 16:11-21). 
In this lesson, we have seen how Abraham’s life turned around when he chose to obey God under all circumstances and realized that His plans for him were best. God has special plans for each of us. When we look to God, we will see that He can take our worst situations and use them for our good and for His glory (see Romans 8:28). 
Hagar and Ishmael Are Sent Away 
8 When Isaac grew up and was about to be weaned, Abraham prepared a huge feast to celebrate the occasion. 9 But Sarah saw Ishmael—the son of Abraham and her Egyptian servant Hagar—making fun of her son, Isaac.[a] 10 So she turned to Abraham and demanded, “Get rid of that slave woman and her son. He is not going to share the inheritance with my son, Isaac. I won’t have it!” 
11 This upset Abraham very much because Ishmael was his son. 12 But God told Abraham, “Do not be upset over the boy and your servant. Do whatever Sarah tells you, for Isaac is the son through whom your descendants will be counted. 13 But I will also make a nation of the descendants of Hagar’s son because he is your son, too.” 
14 So Abraham got up early the next morning, prepared food and a container of water, and strapped them on Hagar’s shoulders. Then he sent her away with their son, and she wandered aimlessly in the wilderness of Beersheba. 
15 When the water was gone, she put the boy in the shade of a bush. 16 Then she went and sat down by herself about a hundred yards[b] away. “I don’t want to watch the boy die,” she said, as she burst into tears. 
17 But God heard the boy crying, and the angel of God called to Hagar from heaven, “Hagar, what’s wrong? Do not be afraid! God has heard the boy crying as he lies there. 18 Go to him and comfort him, for I will make a great nation from his descendants.” 
19 Then God opened Hagar’s eyes, and she saw a well full of water. She quickly filled her water container and gave the boy a drink. 
20 And God was with the boy as he grew up in the wilderness. He became a skillful archer,

Do not think, though, that everyone is going to be happy when God works in your life. Some may be jealous of your blessing and the favor that God shows you. Be thankful to the Lord through this, and ask Him to bless these people as well. Remember do unto others as you would have them do unto you. This is the true Christian walk. 
 
Gen 21:1 And the LORD visited Sarah as he had said, and the LORD did unto Sarah as he had spoken. 
Gen 21:2 For Sarah conceived, and bare Abraham a son in his old age, at the set time of which God had spoken to him. 
Gen 21:3 And Abraham called the name of his son that was born unto him, whom Sarah bare to him, Isaac. 
Gen 21:4 And Abraham circumcised his son Isaac being eight days old, as God had commanded him. 
Gen 21:5 And Abraham was an hundred years old, when his son Isaac was born unto him. 
Gen 21:6 And Sarah said, God hath made me to laugh, so that all that hear will laugh with me.

1 The lord kept his word and did for Sarah exactly what he had promised. 
Genesis 21:1 
 
2 She became pregnant, and she gave birth to a son for Abraham in his old age. This happened at just the time God had said it would. 
Genesis 21:2 
 
3 And Abraham named their son Isaac. 
Genesis 21:3 
 
4 Eight days after Isaac was born, Abraham circumcised him as God had commanded. 
Genesis 21:4 
 
5 Abraham was 100 years old when Isaac was born. 
Genesis 21:5 
 
6 And Sarah declared, “God has brought me laughter. All who hear about this will laugh with me. 
Genesis 21:6 
 
7 Who would have said to Abraham that Sarah would nurse a baby? Yet I have given Abraham a son in his old age!”

8 When Isaac grew up and was about to be weaned, Abraham prepared a huge feast to celebrate the occasion.

9 But Sarah saw Ishmael—the son of Abraham and her Egyptian servant Hagar—making fun of her son, Isaac.

10 So she turned to Abraham and demanded, “Get rid of that slave woman and her son. He is not going to share the inheritance with my son, Isaac. I won’t have it!”

11 This upset Abraham very much because Ishmael was his son.

12 But God told Abraham, “Do not be upset over the boy and your servant. Do whatever Sarah tells you, for Isaac is the son through whom your descendants will be counted.

13 But I will also make a nation of the descendants of Hagar’s son because he is your son, too.”

14 So Abraham got up early the next morning, prepared food and a container of water, and strapped them on Hagar’s shoulders. Then he sent her away with their son, and she wandered aimlessly in the wilderness of Beersheba.

15 When the water was gone, she put the boy in the shade of a bush. 
Genesis 21:15 
 
16 Then she went and sat down by herself about a hundred yards away. “I don’t want to watch the boy die,” she said, as she burst into tears.

17 But God heard the boy crying, and the angel of God called to Hagar from heaven, “Hagar, what’s wrong? Do not be afraid! God has heard the boy crying as he lies there.

18 Go to him and comfort him, for I will make a great nation from his descendants.” 
Genesis 21:18 
 
19 Then God opened Hagar’s eyes, and she saw a well full of water. She quickly filled her water container and gave the boy a drink.

20 And God was with the boy as he grew up in the wilderness. He became a skillful archer,

21 and he settled in the wilderness of Paran. His mother arranged for him to marry a woman from the land of Egypt.

22 About this time, Abimelech came with Phicol, his army commander, to visit Abraham. “God is obviously with you, helping you in everything you do,” Abimelech said.

23 “Swear to me in God’s name that you will never deceive me, my children, or any of my descendants. I have been loyal to you, so now swear that you will be loyal to me and to this country where you are living as a foreigner.” 
Genesis 21:23 
 
24 Abraham replied, “Yes, I swear to it!” 
Genesis 21:24 
 
25 Then Abraham complained to Abimelech about a well that Abimelech’s servants had taken by force from Abraham’s servants. 
Genesis 21:25 
 
26 “This is the first I’ve heard of it,” Abimelech answered. “I have no idea who is responsible. You have never complained about this before.” 
Genesis 21:26 
 
27 Abraham then gave some of his sheep, goats, and cattle to Abimelech, and they made a treaty.

28 But Abraham also took seven additional female lambs and set them off by themselves.

29 Abimelech asked, “Why have you set these seven apart from the others?” 
Genesis 21:29 
 
30 Abraham replied, “Please accept these seven lambs to show your agreement that I dug this well.”

31 Then he named the place Beersheba (which means “well of the oath”), because that was where they had sworn the oath.

32 After making their covenant at Beersheba, Abimelech left with Phicol, the commander of his army, and they returned home to the land of the Philistines.

33 Then Abraham planted a tamarisk tree at Beersheba, and there he worshiped the lord, the Eternal God.

34 And Abraham lived as a foreigner in Philistine country for a long time.
