Isaiah 49:7-26 - Mercy to Israel

Everything we do at Westside is centred on knowing Jesus and making Jesus known. Christ's great commission is for His disciples to go out and make disciples (Matthew 28:18-19). In Jesus' parable of the Great Banquet (Luke 14), He tells us to go out and compel as many people as possible to come to His Father's banqueting table so that His house may be full. There is no denying that our clear calling as the global church is to make Jesus known to those who don't know Him. But making Jesus known at Westside isn't simply tied into missions and evangelism, for knowing Jesus isn't a one-time act but an ongoing process -- what God begins, He completes (Romans 8:30 and Philippians 1:7). And the fact is, Jesus calls us to disciple-making, not convert--making; but that said, the role of any disciple is calling others to follow Jesus.

It has always been God’s intention to provide the blessings of salvation to every nation. Jesus died for the sins of the whole world (see I John 2:2), and everyone who believes in Him has eternal life and the guarantee of His love. The Holy Scriptures were given to Israel and it was through them that God brought Jesus Christ into the world (see Romans 9:4-5). Jesus was sent to bring redemption to the world so that all who believe will be saved. In this week’s lesson, we will examine the great prophecy that foretells God’s plan of redemption. 
I. THE MESSIAH: GOD’S SERVANT (Isaiah 49:1-4) 
God created us all for His own purposes (Isaiah 49:1-3). 
Whatever God has called us to do, we must perform it regardless of the circumstances (Isaiah 49:4). 
II. THE MESSIAH: A LIGHT TO THE GENTILES (Isaiah 49:5-7) 
Our ultimate purpose is to glorify the LORD (Isaiah 49:5). 
As believers, our major mission is to share the gospel with those who do not know the LORD (Isaiah 49:6). 
God will execute His plans in His own time and not ours (Isaiah 49:7-8). 
III. THE MESSIAH: A RESTORER OF ISRAEL (Isaiah 49:8-13) 
At a future time, Jesus will return and restore Israel and save Gentiles and there will be singing and rejoicing (Isaiah 49:9-13). 
Isaiah prophesied that God would make Jesus Christ a “light to the Gentiles.” This is a powerful illustration that Jesus Himself used (see John 8:12). Isaiah paints a picture of the Gentiles sitting in darkness without the light of truth and without hope of salvation (see Isaiah 9:1-2). Isaiah repeatedly used the image of light as that which offers hope and salvation (see Isaiah 60:1). Jesus is the Light to all believers, and those who know Him have the privilege and opportunity to introduce others to the Light. God has set the church in the world to “shine as lights” (see Philippians 2:15). We are to be lights that lead others to The Light where they can receive God’s redemption.

From Isaiah 41 through 53, there are 20 references to one who is uniquely identified as the Lord’s servant. With the benefit of the New Testament, we know this servant to be Jesus Christ. In Isaiah 49:1-13 we see six qualities of the ministry of the Lord’s Servant, and from these we can learn how better to live as servants of Jesus Christ. 
  
Isaiah 48:22, with its solemn warning of no peace for the wicked, lays the groundwork for Isaiah 49. Though the people are freed from captivity, their greatest obstacle remains: They cannot be reconciled to the Lord unless atonement is made for their sin. They need a message of good news and forgiveness. 
  
Six Qualities of the Servant’s Ministry: 
  
1. The Lord’s Servant Speaks (49:1-2) 
2. The Lord’s Servant Glorifies God (49:3) 
3. The Lord’s Servant Trusts When Tested (49:4)

The nation of Israel was a nation that continuously found themselves in trouble because of their unfaithfulness, lack of loyalty to the Lord, and disobedience. In Times of Trouble - Isaiah 49:8-13 CCCC 06/14/2020

To bring a diverse community into a growing relationship with God and one another.

DIVERSITY is focused on racial diversity but includes and implies socio-economic, cultural, ability, and age diversity as well.

COMMUNITY means both the region near the church building, but also all the communities in which our members live.

GROWING means that, until heaven, God is never done shaping us into who He wants us to be. He does that through our RELATIONSHIPS with Him and others.

The Israelites had faced crisis after crisis, but after so much faithlessness to God, God let them a foreign empire drag them away from home. In foreign lands, many let the culture around them lead them astray, others forgot their past and who they were, and most lost their hope. But God still had plans. He would shepherd the wayward back, remember the lost, and gather a people greater than they had imagined.
