In 1960, Lilly Grove Missionary Baptist Church was first organized in a small frame building at 3602 Drew Street in the Third Ward area of Houston under the leadership of Reverend Norris Terry.  Reverend Terry resigned as Pastor after four years of service.

• Reverend Willie E. Powell 1964 to 1981
He was instrumental in moving the church from it's original location.

• Reverend Curtis Wallace 1981 to 1990
Under his leadership a larger place of worship was built adjacent to the existing edifice.  The old building was renovated unto classrooms, a spacious cafeteria and a small Chapel.  Reverend Wallace resigned as Pastor in 1990.

• Reverend Terry K. Anderson 1991 to Present
Lilly Grove called Reverend Terry K. Anderson of Eunice, Louisiana to become the fourth Pastor, on December 18, 1990. Reverend Anderson began his tenure as Pastor on the first Sunday in February 1991.

Why a Child? | Dr. David Jeremiah | Isaiah 9:6

The story of Jesus coming into the world is not so much the story of a birth as it is the story of a gift. From Earth’s perspective, it was the entrance of Jesus into Planet Earth. But from Heaven’s perspective, it was the departure of Jesus Christ from Heaven. 
 
 
Jesus is God. Therefore, He is eternal. He has always existed. But at just the right time, the Son of God came to this earth. The Bible says, “But when the right time came, God sent his Son, born of a woman, subject to the law” (Galatians 4:4 NLT). 
 
 
We need to remember that Jesus made a choice to leave the glory of Heaven and walk among us as a man. The very Son of God was born into the most unsanitary conditions imaginable, laid in a little bed of straw, and wrapped in pieces of cloth. This is how the Creator of the universe came to us in human form. 
 
 
The first Christmas was not about a gift to a child; it was about the gift of a child. 
 
 
Isaiah tells us, “For a child is born to us, a son is given to us. The government will rest on his shoulders. And he will be called: Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace” (9:6 NLT). Each word that Isaiah chose to describe Jesus gives us a different insight into His nature, character, purpose, and plan. 
 
 
His name is Wonderful Counselor. That takes care of the dullness of life. We no longer have to settle for the cheap substitutes but instead can experience what God has for us. It also takes care of the decisions of life. No longer do the problems we face need to plague us, because there is One who wants to counsel us. 
 
 
His name is Mighty God. That takes care of the demands of life. We must never forget that Jesus was God incarnate. This means that Jesus has unlimited power. And if we put our trust in this Mighty God, He will give us the power to live the life He has called us to live. 
 
 
His name is Everlasting Father. That takes care of our future. We know that life is not merely what we experience here and now on Earth. According to the Bible, we will live forever. The big question is where we will live. If we put our faith in Jesus Christ, then we will live in Heaven. Because He was born, crucified, and resurrected, we can have this hope beyond the grave. 
 
 
His name is Prince of Peace. That takes care of the disturbances of life. Life throws us a lot of curve balls. Frightening things happen, and we don’t know what to do. We need the Prince of Peace to step in. 
 
 
We don’t have to wait for Christ to return before we can experience His rule and reign in our lives. That can happen right now. We can surrender our lives to Him and experience the purpose and plan that He has for us.

In presidential election years, my wife has often wondered out loud “Why would anyone even want that job!” 
 
It’s a fair question. Running for president involves putting a target on your chest while telling the world, “I’d like to have the weight of responsibility for the whole nation on my shoulders for the next four—maybe eight—years. 
 
It’s been said that there must be a trace of narcissism in anyone who runs for president. The responsibilities are overwhelming. If you’re doing the job right, the pace is relentless. You can expect virtually constant opposition anytime you decide or plan something. And should you win the election, you can know that you will make mistakes along the way—any of which could have significant repercussions for the country. 
 
Jesus was already a king when he came into our world. He was already carrying the weight of the world on his shoulders before he arrived as a baby in Bethlehem. The magi who came to pay tribute were acknowledging by their gifts that this child was already a king. 
 
Years before he was born, another king—Solomon—wrote a psalm of praise to this coming king: 
May he have dominion from sea to sea, 
and from the River to the ends of the earth! 
May desert tribes bow down before him, 
and his enemies lick the dust! 
May the kings of Tarshish and of the coastlands render him tribute; 
may the kings of Sheba and Seba bring gifts! 
May all kings fall down before him, 
all nations serve him! 
(Psalm 72:8-11) 
 
When Pontius Pilate, on the morning that Jesus was to be crucified, asked him if He was a king, Jesus responded by saying that His kingdom was not of this world. His rule and reign are far beyond that of any human leader. He is the King of Kings and the Lord of Lords. 
 
Kingship, the Bible says, belongs to the Lord. He rules over all the nations (Psalm 22:28). He rules over the affairs of men, including whatever happens in your life today. He rules in power, in majesty, in wisdom and justice. We can rejoice because the Lord reigns. 
 
Prayer: Jesus, I acknowledge You as my King and the ruler over my life today. Thank You for caring for every detail of my life.

Christmas is Coming | Isaiah 9:6

It is the mission of New Life of Albany to serve our community in any way we can through the love of Jesus Christ and to exalt Jesus in every aspect of our lives. We believe the Bible is divine and inspired by God Himself (2 Timothy 3:16 & 2 Peter 1:21).
