This section of Jeremiah 31:31-34 contains one of the most significant prophecies in the Tanach (Old Testament) - God's promise for a NEW COVENANT! In these verses, God is promising that the days will come when He will make a NEW covenant with Israel. Not like the Mosaic covenant (Law of Moses), which was written on stone and has been broken by Israel; But under the new covenant, God's Law will be written on the heart of each man and woman who enters the covenant. This new covenant is not only for one specific nation but is personal between man and God. 
 
Unlike the old "Mosaic" covenant, this new covenant will be an unconditional covenant. Even though the people of Israel failed and sinned against God, in his love and mercy, God will provide a new covenant through which they will all KNOW Him (worship & obey). Therefore, this new covenant will create an eternal relationship between God and His people; It will forever change hearts, produce universal knowledge of God and will provide eternal forgiveness of sin. 
 
Jeremiah 31:31-34 Translation: “Behold, days are coming, declares the LORD, when I will make a new covenant with the house of Israel and the house of Judah, not like the covenant that I made with their fathers in the day when I took them by the hand to bring them out of the land of Egypt, for they broke my covenant, though I was a husband to them, declares the LORD. 
 
For this is the covenant that I will make with the house of Israel after those days, declares the LORD: I will put my Torah/law within them, and I will write it on their hearts. And I will be their God, and they will be my people. And no longer will each/person teach his neighbor and each/person his brother, saying,‘Know the LORD,’ for they will all know me, from the least of them to the greatest, declares the LORD. For I will forgive their iniquity, and their sin I will remember no more.” (Jeremiah 31:31-34 or 30-33 in the Hebrew Bible, ESV/TLV)

Jeremiah's purchase of the field signifies that the remnant would return to Judah, which foreshadows the masses coming to Christ under the N.C. Jeremiah also faces more persecution in these passages. 
 
A New Covenant - Jeremiah 31:31-36 
 
31 "Behold, the days are coming, says the Lord, when I will make a new covenant with the house of Israel and with the house of Judah— 32 not according to the covenant that I made with their fathers in the day that I took them by the hand to lead them out of the land of Egypt, My covenant which they broke, though I was a husband to them,[a] says the Lord. 33 But this is the covenant that I will make with the house of Israel after those days, says the Lord: I will put My law in their minds, and write it on their hearts; and I will be their God, and they shall be My people. 34 No more shall every man teach his neighbor, and every man his brother, saying, 'Know the Lord,' for they all shall know Me, from the least of them to the greatest of them, says the Lord. For I will forgive their iniquity, and their sin I will remember no more." 
 
35 Thus says the Lord, 
Who gives the sun for a light by day, 
The ordinances of the moon and the stars for a light by night, 
Who disturbs the sea, 
And its waves roar 
(The Lord of hosts is His name): 
36 "If those ordinances depart 
From before Me, says the Lord, 
Then the seed of Israel shall also cease 
From being a nation before Me forever."

This prophetic chapter has a vision of the united kingdom Israel, of the wonderful time when God himself brings back the exiles of Judah and Israel, who were taken to a foreign country as a judgment for their sins back to their own land Israel. This chapter is notable for 
 
1. the quoting of 31:15 in the “Massacre of the Innocents" narrative in Mt 2:16-18). 
 
2. God’s declaration of the new covenant, the “inward” code for living written not on stone but in the “hearts” of Gods people. (33) 
This chapter beautifully portrays the expression of sorrow and repentance of God’s chosen people and the LORDs affirmation of His everlasting love and faithfulness.
