Ecclesiastes 1:3 (NASB) “What advantage does man have in all his work which he does under the sun?” 
 
This research question defines Solomon’s experiments through Ecclesiastes. What is the profit to life’s toil? What advantage exists? 
 
The key to this verse and Ecclesiastes is “under the sun” (here is the long list for cross-referencing the phrase "under the sun" in the book ... 1:3, 1:9, 1:14, 2:17-18, 2:20-22, 3:16, 4:1-3, 4:7, 5:13, 6:1, 6:12, 8:9, 8:15, 9:3, 9:6, 9:9, 10:5). 
 
“Under the sun” explains the assessment as horizontal. The experiments’ perspective is anthrocentric, viewed from a mortal’s point-of-view, from a secular/pragmatic perspective. 
 
The flow of topics doesn’t form a logical outline but a circular discussion. In chapters 1-2, Solomon scrutinizes life, wisdom, wealth, and death “under the sun” without God. In chapters 2-10, he re-examines them with the addition of God. Finally, in chapters 11-12, life is about faith, wisdom is a lesson to be learned, wealth is for enjoyment, and death provides context for judgment and accountability.

24 A person can do nothing better than to eat and drink and find satisfaction in their own toil. This too, I see, is from the hand of God, 25 for without him, who can eat or find enjoyment? 26 To the person who pleases him, God gives wisdom, knowledge and happiness, but to the sinner he gives the task of gathering and storing up wealth to hand it over to the one who pleases God. This too is meaningless, a chasing after the wind.

The book of Ecclesiastes contains Proverbs, maxims, sayings, and is largely an autobiographical story. Solomon wrote it late in his life, approximately 935 B.C. He had become aware of the mistakes that he made throughout his life and began to document them. This book was written by Solomon when he was out-of-fellowship with God. The book is full of human viewpoint and talks about how everything is useless and vanity without a right relationship with God. The purpose of Ecclesiastes is to spare future generations the suffering and misery of seeking after foolish, meaningless, materialistic emptiness, and to offer wisdom by discovering truth in seeking after God.

The Good News of Salvation 
We recognize that God created the world and has the right to rule over the world (Revelation 4:11). Sadly, however, we understand that each of us choose to sin against God (Romans 3:23). Certainly, disobedience against an all-powerful, creator God deserves justice, meaning we deserve judgment. The Bible describes that judgment as death and eternity apart from God (Romans 6:23; Revelation 20:12-15; 21:8). Thankfully, there is good news though! The Bible teaches that God loved the world (John 3:16) and sent His Son to die for our sins (Romans 5:8) and over come sin by rising from the dead (1 Corinthians 15:3-4)! Because Jesus died and rose again, we can be saved by confessing our sin to God, believing on Jesus’ death and resurrection, and asking God to save us (Romans 10:9-10,13). This means we do not earn salvation from God; rather, He graciously gives us salvation through faith in Jesus (Ephesians 2:8-9; Titus 3:3-7). If you haven’t asked Christ alone to save you from your sins, we would encourage you to do so today! The Goal of Our Services 
Looking further at the Bible’s teaching regarding Christianity, we also recognize the importance of believers belonging to and participating in churches as they meet (Acts 2:41-42; 1 Corinthians 1:2). Biblically, the church is to be a place where God is praised through song, prayers are made, the Bible is preached, spiritual gifts are exercised, the Lord’s table/communion is remembered, and believers are challenged and encouraged. 
 
If for some reason, you are unable to attend church at this week, we encourage you: 
1.) to sing along with us – even if you are alone. While we recognize that it can be awkward, God is still worthy of our praise. 
 
2.) to listen carefully to the preaching of God's Word in the Bible. 
 
3.) to return to church as soon as possible. God intends for all believers to belong to a church and serve within it (Hebrews 10:25; 1 Corinthians 12; Ephesians 4:11-16).
