Matthew Henry's Complete Commentary - 1 Chronicles 24:20-31

Most of the Levites here named were mentioned before, 1 Chron. 23:16-23 They were of those who were to attend the priests in the service of the house of God. But they are here mentioned again as heads of the twenty-four courses of Levites (and about so many are here named), who were to attend the twenty-four courses of the priests: they are therefore said to cast lots over against their brethren (so they are called, not their lords), the sons of Aaron, who were not to lord it over God's... read more

And the rest of the sons of Levi were these ,.... Who were not priests, only Levites; and from hence, to 1 Chronicles 24:30 their names are given; of the sons of Amram, Shubael, and his son Jehdeiah; Rehabiah the son of Eleazar, and Isshiah the son of Rehabiah; of the Izharites, so called from Izhar, the brother of Amram, Shelomoth, and his son Jahath; and of the sons of Hebron, another brother of Amram, Jeriah, Amariah, Jahaziel, and Jekameam; of the sons of Uzziel, another brother of... read more

The Pulpit Commentary - 1 Chronicles 24:23

This verse is manifestly imperfect. What is necessary to fill up the evident gaps is to be found, however, in 1 Chronicles 23:19 ; also the pointed allusion to the time of David, in 1 Chronicles 26:31 , is deserving of especial notice. The four names of this verse, then, are descendants of Kohath's third son, Hebron ( 1 Chronicles 23:12 ). read more

Neither “Hebron” nor “the first” is found in the present Hebrew text; but they seem to have been rightly supplied by our translators from 1 Chronicles 23:19. The four persons named appear to have been contemporaries of David, the heads of the Hebronite houses in his time (compare 1 Chronicles 26:31). read more

Bridgeway Bible Commentary - 1 Chronicles 24:1-31

Arrangements for the Levites (23:1-26:32)Having appointed Solomon to be his successor, David made further arrangements for the service of the temple. First, he set out a plan to distribute duties among the Levites. A census showed that there were 38,000 Levites eligible for temple service. Of these, 14,000 were official record-keepers, judges, guards, singers and musicians. The remainder were to help in the general service of the temple (23:1-6). Clearly, there were far too many Levites to work... read more

3. The Twenty-four Courses of the Priests CHAPTER 24 1. The twenty-four courses (1 Chronicles 24:1-19 ) 2. The organization of other Levites (1 Chronicles 24:20-31 ) In the previous chapter we read of 24,000 Levites set apart for the service. In the next chapter we find twenty-four leaders of song and music appointed, and here David instituted twenty-four courses of priests. Each of these ministered a full week, from one sabbath to the next. These courses were not only continued by... read more
