Luke 3:7–18 (CSB): He then said to the crowds who came out to be baptised by him, “Brood of vipers! Who warned you to flee from the coming wrath? 8 Therefore produce fruit﻿ consistent with repentance. And don’t start saying to yourselves, ‘We have Abraham as our father,’ for I tell you that God is able to raise up children for Abraham from these stones. 9 The ax is already at the root of the trees. Therefore, every tree that doesn’t produce good fruit will be cut down and thrown into the fire.” 
10 “What then should we do?” the crowds were asking him. 
11 He replied to them, “The one who has two shirts must share with someone who has none, and the one who has food must do the same.” 
12 Tax collectors﻿ also came to be baptised, and they asked him, “Teacher, what should we do?” 
13 He told them, “Don’t collect any more than what you have been authorised.” 
14 Some soldiers also questioned him, “What should we do?” 
He said to them, “Don’t take money from anyone by force or false accusation, and be satisfied with your wages.” 
15 Now the people were waiting expectantly, and all of them were questioning in their hearts whether John might be the Messiah. 16 John answered them all, “I baptise you with water, but one who is more powerful than I am is coming. I am not worthy to untie the strap of his sandals. He will baptise you with﻿ the Holy Spirit and fire. 17 His winnowing shovel﻿ is in his hand to clear his threshing floor and gather the wheat into his barn, but the chaff he will burn with fire that never goes out.” 18 Then, along with many other exhortations, he proclaimed good news to the people. 
 
Zephaniah 3:14–20 (CSB) 
 
14 Sing for joy, Daughter Zion; 
shout loudly, Israel! 
Be glad and celebrate with all your heart, 
Daughter Jerusalem! 
15 The Lord has removed your punishment; 
he has turned back your enemy. 
The King of Israel, the Lord, is among you; 
you need no longer fear harm. 
16 On that day it will be said to Jerusalem: 
“Do not fear; 
Zion, do not let your hands grow weak. 
17 The Lord your God is among you, 
a warrior﻿ who saves. 
He will rejoice over you﻿ with gladness. 
He will be quiet﻿ in his love. 
He will delight in you with singing.” 
18 I will gather those who have been driven﻿ 
from the appointed festivals; 
they will be a tribute from you﻿ 
and a reproach on her. 
19 Yes, at that time 
I will deal with all who oppress you. 
I will save the lame﻿ and gather the outcasts; 
I will make those who were disgraced 
throughout the earth 
receive praise and fame. 
20 At that time I will bring you﻿ back, 
yes, at the time I will gather you. 
I will give you fame and praise 
among all the peoples of the earth, 
when I restore your fortunes﻿ before your eyes.

2021-12-12 "Waiting in the Tension" Zephaniah 3:14-20; Luke 3:7-18

Nehemiah 8v1-12 (NIV): 
 
1 all the people came together as one in the square before the Water Gate. They told Ezra the teacher of the Law to bring out the Book of the Law of Moses, which the Lord had commanded for Israel. 
 
2 So on the first day of the seventh month Ezra the priest brought the Law before the assembly, which was made up of men and women and all who were able to understand. 3 He read it aloud from daybreak till noon as he faced the square before the Water Gate in the presence of the men, women and others who could understand. And all the people listened attentively to the Book of the Law. 
 
4 Ezra the teacher of the Law stood on a high wooden platform built for the occasion. Beside him on his right stood Mattithiah, Shema, Anaiah, Uriah, Hilkiah and Maaseiah; and on his left were Pedaiah, Mishael, Malkijah, Hashum, Hashbaddanah, Zechariah and Meshullam. 
 
5 Ezra opened the book. All the people could see him because he was standing above them; and as he opened it, the people all stood up. 6 Ezra praised the Lord, the great God; and all the people lifted their hands and responded, “Amen! Amen!” Then they bowed down and worshiped the Lord with their faces to the ground. 
 
7 The Levites—Jeshua, Bani, Sherebiah, Jamin, Akkub, Shabbethai, Hodiah, Maaseiah, Kelita, Azariah, Jozabad, Hanan and Pelaiah—instructed the people in the Law while the people were standing there. 8 They read from the Book of the Law of God, making it clear[a] and giving the meaning so that the people understood what was being read. 
 
9 Then Nehemiah the governor, Ezra the priest and teacher of the Law, and the Levites who were instructing the people said to them all, “This day is holy to the Lord your God. Do not mourn or weep.” For all the people had been weeping as they listened to the words of the Law. 
 
10 Nehemiah said, “Go and enjoy choice food and sweet drinks, and send some to those who have nothing prepared. This day is holy to our Lord. Do not grieve, for the joy of the Lord is your strength.” 
 
11 The Levites calmed all the people, saying, “Be still, for this is a holy day. Do not grieve.” 
 
12 Then all the people went away to eat and drink, to send portions of food and to celebrate with great joy, because they now understood the words that had been made known to them.

We are grateful to Rhod Thomas from Gateway Church, Sarn for preparing a video for us today. Rhod was going to join us in person to preach but God has opened a door (literally!) for their church plant to begin meeting. 
 
How is is that as human beings, we are capable of such awesome feats and such devastating destruction; such acts of compassion and such cruelty? How does the mess of human relationships fit with the picture of a people made in God's image - a perfect God of love? Grab a Bible, a notepad and join us today as we dive into Genesis 3:8-24.... 
 
"8 Then the man and his wife heard the sound of the Lord God as he was walking in the garden in the cool of the day, and they hid from the Lord God among the trees of the garden. 9 But the Lord God called to the man, “Where are you?” 
 
10 He answered, “I heard you in the garden, and I was afraid because I was naked; so I hid.” 
 
11 And he said, “Who told you that you were naked? Have you eaten from the tree that I commanded you not to eat from?” 
 
12 The man said, “The woman you put here with me—she gave me some fruit from the tree, and I ate it.” 
 
13 Then the Lord God said to the woman, “What is this you have done?” 
 
The woman said, “The serpent deceived me, and I ate.” 
 
14 So the Lord God said to the serpent, “Because you have done this, 
 
“Cursed are you above all livestock 
 and all wild animals! 
You will crawl on your belly 
 and you will eat dust 
 all the days of your life. 
15 And I will put enmity 
 between you and the woman, 
 and between your offspring and hers; 
he will crush your head, 
 and you will strike his heel.” 
16 To the woman he said, 
 
“I will make your pains in childbearing very severe; 
 with painful labor you will give birth to children. 
Your desire will be for your husband, 
 and he will rule over you.” 
17 To Adam he said, “Because you listened to your wife and ate fruit from the tree about which I commanded you, ‘You must not eat from it,’ 
 
“Cursed is the ground because of you; 
 through painful toil you will eat food from it 
 all the days of your life. 
18 It will produce thorns and thistles for you, 
 and you will eat the plants of the field. 
19 By the sweat of your brow 
 you will eat your food 
until you return to the ground, 
 since from it you were taken; 
for dust you are 
 and to dust you will return.” 
20 Adam named his wife Eve, because she would become the mother of all the living. 
 
21 The Lord God made garments of skin for Adam and his wife and clothed them. 22 And the Lord God said, “The man has now become like one of us, knowing good and evil. He must not be allowed to reach out his hand and take also from the tree of life and eat, and live forever.” 23 So the Lord God banished him from the Garden of Eden to work the ground from which he had been taken. 24 After he drove the man out, he placed on the east side of the Garden of Eden cherubim and a flaming sword flashing back and forth to guard the way to the tree of life."

Riots, unrest, chaos, lies, death, the undermining of democracy, the rise of conspiracy, fear and violence - and the damaging association of these things with the glorious gospel of Jesus Christ? How is the world meant to see and understand the love of God in all of this? 
 
What about in our own country? The continued spread of Coronavirus? Fears about vaccines, the pressure on our healthcare and education systems, the eradication of trust in our leaders? What as Christians are we meant to do with this? 
 
“God gave us a spirit not of fear, but of power, and love and self control. Therefore, do not be ashamed about the testimony of our Lord.” (2 Timothy 1:7b-8a)

Psalm 143 
1 Lord, hear my prayer. 
In your faithfulness listen to my plea, 
and in your righteousness answer me. 
2 Do not bring your servant into judgment, 
for no one alive is righteous in your sight. 
3 For the enemy has pursued me, crushing me to the ground, 
making me live in darkness like those long dead. 
4 My spirit is weak within me; my heart is overcome with dismay. 
5 I remember the days of old; I meditate on all you have done; 
I reflect on the work of your hands. 
6 I spread out my hands to you; 
I am like parched land before you.Selah

What do you need rescuing from? Are you a slave to anything? Do you feel oppressed, or overwhelmed with suffering or misery? Can you rescue yourself from the situation? If not... who can rescue you? 
 
Today we take a dive in to Exodus 3 and spend some time exploring God's encounter with Moses at the burning bush, and discover more of the heart of the God who rescues.
