It is not good to show “partiality” to the wicked and so deprive the innocent of justice (v5). Judges should let facts guide their decisions and not celebrity status, relationship or gifts. Facts will lead to a guilty or not guilty verdict!

A corrupt judge will secretly accept bribes to turn the course of justice (v23). This Proverb address two classes of people; 1) Elected Officials (Ex. 18:21) and 2) Spiritual authority figures (1 Tim. 3:1-4).

Strife is a blessing blocker.  It's important to identify it and know how to respond when it occurs.

Birds of a feather, flock together meaning, people who share the same interests, will naturally 
group themselves together in a given situation. 
 
However, if you want to be different than Worldly people; change your association (2 Cor. 6:17). Then, you can form new habits and foster new relationships which both are beneficial to spiritual growth!

The Benefits of Wisdom (Proverbs 17:4-6)

The Lord tries our heart (v3).  Tries means to test, examine or prove. God will put us through test to show us what is in our hearts esp. if we're murmuring about what we don't have and asking why.  Test by God shows character, weaknesses, motive and even strengths which encourages us to even do better.

Gold and silver are tested by fire, and a person's heart is tested by the LORD (v2).  The implication is that God will put us through tests to prove and show us what’s in your heart so that we can correct it and chagned!

Never plan to injure or harm anyone with your words.  God is watching therefore guard your thoughts. In guarding your thoughts, you are guarding your heart which from it flows everything that you say and do!

Hard work brings success.  Whatever your task may be (work hard at it) as something done for the Lord because promotion comes from Him. (Col. 3:23-34; Psalm 75:6-7)

Wise men teach their lips how to behave.  They know what and when to speak and how to say it. Because they think, then ponder to make sure their thoughts are in line with what is pleasing to the Lord!

These proverbs gives advice to all that are in authority and under authority.  Those under authority can win God's favor by submitting to His ordained authority.  Those in authority can win His favor by be loyal and faithful in their positions of authority!

Solomon gives advice to civil leaders and indirectly for anyone in authority to “never judge unfairly” or "abuse" their position of authority over others!

A friendly smile can make someone happy and good news make them strong. (v30)  How do you encourage others?  Do you make them see and hear good things?
