1. Jesus seems to say that there are different kinds of freedom. The Jews thought themselves free yet Jesus proclaims that true freedom is found in him. What’s the difference between “Son-given” freedom and other types of freedom? 
 
2. One of the keys to this passage is found in the word “abide” (or remain, continue). What are habits/practises you have in your life that help you abide in Christ? 
 
3. One of the big picture pieces of this passage is that John is making a statement about the divinity of Jesus. Traditionally, the church has said that Jesus is both human & divine yet for 2000 years, people have challenged this view. Why does it matter?

Elizabeth Barrett Browning writes, “Earth's crammed with heaven, And every common bush afire with God, But only he who sees takes off his shoes; The rest sit round and pluck blackberries.” What “common bushes” might God be inviting you to reconsider in order to see his presence in your life? What “blackberries” might be functioning as distractions to engaging with God’s presence in your life? 
 
2. What are some of the things that Jesus said or did in the gospels that baffle you the most? What do you do with these scenes that don’t quite fit the boxes of your theology or personality? How might you allow these misfitting dimensions of Jesus to find appropriate space in your life? 
 
3. God didn’t just invite Moses to ponder or reflect. He called him to an act of obedience. The same is true of Jesus – he called people to follow him as disciples in lives of obedience. Discovering God in our lives has just as much to do with acts of obedience as deep reflection. What act of obedience is Jesus calling you to in this season?

The sermon suggested six aspects of our lives that might be re-ordered as we experience conversion: tradition, a sense of right and wrong, expression of devotion to God, a sense of belonging, distinction and identity, a gut level distaste. Are there any others you would add to this list? In what parts of your life have you experienced the Spirit bringing conversion? 
 
2. In what ways does a new audience help us to hear the Good News in new ways? 
 
3. What evidence do you see in the world today of a zero sum, “us and them” mentality? How is the Good News of Jesus different from this? How might the Good News of Jesus address and heal our divided ways? 
 
4. Even as we trust that God’s love will never give up on us, our lives need to be transformed to resemble his love - by sacrificing, sharing, and including. Who (whether an individual or people group) is God bringing to mind for you to sacrifice for, to share with, to include?
