Is there any one thing you are sure of these days? 
 
When the pandemic hit our world, everything we were sure and certain about became uncertain. Will we go back to school? Will the students get to play sports? College coaches have built great teams, will they even get to play? Will restaurants open back up again? Will businesses return and when will the in-person games and theater return? 
 
If anything, this past year has proven to us the only thing we can actually be sure of these days is our faith that comes from an all-knowing, all-present loving God. Yes, through it all His love has never changed for us. 
 
Change is certain. Christ is constant. 
 
God’s Word says in Romans 10:13, “for, everyone who calls on the name of the Lord will be saved.” (NIV) 
 
“Now faith is confidence in what we hope for and assurance about what we do not see.” Hebrews 11:1 (NIV) The birth of the Holy Spirit is not something we can see with our eyes, but we can feel His presence when the Spirit gives birth to fruit such as love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, and self-control (Galatians 5:22-23 NASB). 
 
But many people still ask me, “How can I be sure?” All too often, followers of Jesus Christ look for the assurance of salvation in the wrong places. We seek assurance of salvation in the things God is doing in our lives, in our spiritual growth, in the good works, and obedience to God’s Word that is evident in our Christian walk. While these tangible things we can see can be evidence of salvation, they are not the means on which to base our salvation. 
 
Many commentators believe John wrote five books of the Bible: 
The Gospel of John (To Believe) 
The Epistles (letters) - 1,2,3 John (Be Sure) 
Revelation (Be Ready) 
 
1 John 5:11–13 reads, “And this is the testimony: God has given us eternal life, and this life is in his Son. He who has the Son has life; he who does not have the Son of God does not have life. I write these things to you who believe in the name of the Son of God so that you may know that you have eternal life.” 
 
Who is it that has the Son? John 1:12 promises, “As many as received Him, to them He gave the right to become children of God, to those who believe in His name.” If you have Jesus, you have life. Not temporary life, but eternal. 
 
Believers should not wonder and worry each day whether or not we are truly saved. That is why the Bible makes the plan of salvation so clear. 
 
Do you have this assurance? Is your eternal love assured? Because according to God’s Word, you and I don’t have to do anything but believe. 
Jesus Himself assures those who believe in Him: “I give them eternal life, and they shall never perish; no one can snatch them out of my hand. My Father, who has given them to me, is greater than all; no one can snatch them out of my Father’s hand” (John 10:28–29). Eternal life is just that— it is eternal. Once the Spirit is born in you, there is no one, not even yourself, who can take Christ’s God-given gift of salvation away from you. Be assured, true love is eternal. 
 
The adversary will come to you to make you doubt yourself. Assurance means freedom from doubt. By taking God’s Word to heart, you can have no doubt about the reality of your eternal salvation. Remember, doubt is the opposite of the truth. We can have the assurance from Christ’s own Word that our salvation will never be in question. Our assurance of salvation is based on the perfect and complete salvation God has provided for us through His Son Jesus Christ. 
 
But some will say, “Well, I believe all that; but then I have messed up or sinned since I became a Christian.” We are all human. When you believe, your sins are covered by the blood of Christ. God loved you so much that He gave His Son to die for you to cover your sins, yesterday, today, and tomorrow! 
 
Life may present us with surprises along the way, but because of Christ’s death, burial, and resurrection, we can rest and have peace. It is finished. In Him, we are assured of His eternal love and our eternal outcome. 
 
Assurance begins with belief and then the Spirit who is enabled receives the truth, resulting in a sound emotional state and deep soul satisfaction. 
Assurance, then, comes as the fruit of a Spirit-inspired faith that stands on the Word of God. The Word presents the following aspects of the believer's assurance: faith, understanding of truth, a love that is eternal, and hope for today and tomorrow! 
 
Students, friends, family, teachers, coaches, administrators, you’ve got this today, because He has you. 
 
These truths come from God’s Word. 
God’s Word is true. 
God’s Word is enough.

Eternal Love Assured {1 John 5:11–13}

Before David becomes king, the Psalmist pens Psalm 34 and comes to a close with a gentle reminder, “Evil shall slay the wicked, and those who hate the righteous will be condemned. The LORD redeems the soul of His servants, and none of those who take refuge in Him will be condemned.” ‭‭Psalm ‭34:21-22‬ ‭NASB 
 
God’s Word Promises: 
1. You have a Heavenly defender. 
2. Those who hate the righteous will be held guilty. 
3. The Lord redeems the souls of His servants. 
4. None of those who take refuge in HIM will be held guilty. 
 
“When you accept the fact that sometimes seasons are dry and times are hard and that God is in control of both, you will discover a sense of divine refuge, because the hope then is in God and not in yourself.” -Charles R. Swindoll 
 
May God become the object of our souls’ desires. Jesus is our living Hope and Our Heavenly Father still holds the whole world in His hands. When we take refuge in God, the posture of our hearts bows low so He may lifted High. Refuge is found in Jesus Christ. By His blood, we are rescued, redeemed, and healed. 
 
“...and My people who are called by My name humble themselves and pray and seek My face and turn from their wicked ways, then I will hear from heaven, will forgive their sin and will heal their land.” 2 Chronicles 7:14 (NASB)

While the Psalmist David pens Psalm 34:20 (NASB), “He keeps all his bones: not one of them is broken,” he does not have a substantial physical injury. Ultimately, David knows that even if he receives a wound to his body here on earth, eternity will heal it. Davids's heart and mind both know, no part of his essential self shall be broken. David does not necessarily make a physical declaration, but rather a spiritual declaration. The soul may not be injured in this world. The soul is protected by divine love. 
 
God is love. He places His love in you by way of the Holy Spirit when you believe He sent His Son for you and you become One in Him. God’s love watches over every believer, just as He watched over His Son. God’s love preserves every believer, just as He preserved His Son. God’s love protects every believer, just as He protected His Son. God’s love keeps every believer, just as He kept His Son in His perfect power. 
 
Prophecy begins in the Old Testament. On the night of the last plague, the moment when God delivered the Hebrews out of Egyptian bondage into freedom by way of the blood of the Lamb, the command was given for not one bone of the lamb to be broken. (Exodus 12:46) 
 
Jesus, known as the Lamb of God, was crucified on Passover and by His blood, you and I are delivered out of bondage and freedom. On the cross, not one of the lamb’s bones was broken. (John 19:32-36) 
 
But so what? What does this mean for me today? “The Passover lamb, of which not a bone was broken, prefigured Jesus as one, ‘not a bone of whose body should be broken;’ and yet, at the same time, it prefigured the complete keeping and safety of Christ's body, the church; as it is written, He keepeth all his bones; not one of them is broken.” 
 
The church is the body of believers (1 Corinthians 12:27). 
 
God’s divine love watches over the church, just as He watched over His Son. God’s divine love preserves the church, just as He preserved His Son. 
God’s divine love protects the church, just as He protected His Son. 
God’s divine love keeps the church, just as He kept His Son in His perfect power for when His Son returns as foretold in Scripture. 
 
"We wait for the blessed hope - the appearing of the glory of our Great God and Savior, Jesus Christ." Titus 2:3 (NASB) 
 
Regardless of what you can see, May your heart know, God's divine love watches, preserves, protects and keeps you and me together as ONE body during these trying times. And if this love is the standard for all human actions, today you may live LOVED. Loved people love people.

The Soul is Protected by Divine Love {Psalm 34:20}

L.O.V.E. {Psalm 34:12-16}

“The remarkable thing about fearing God is that when you fear God, 
you fear nothing else, whereas if you do not fear God, you fear everything else.” --Oswald Chambers 
 
In Psalm 34, David continues to speak directly to the reader’s heart. He says, 
 
“Oh fear the LORD you His Saints, for to those who fear Him, there is no want. 
The young lions do lack and suffer hunger, but they who seek the LORD shall not 
Be in lack of any good thing. Come you children listen to me I will teach you to fear the LORD.” 
Psalm 34: 9-11 (NASB) 
 
Fear is expressed in two ways: terror or reverence. 
 
While the October weather is spectacular, the skeletons, spiders, cobwebs, and monsters have come out to line the porches and streets to create a dreadful environment. Books are purchased to read this month from the “horror” literary genre in which fiction events evoke fearful feelings in both the characters and the readers. Authors who fall into this genre would be Edgar Allan Poe, Steven King, or Mary Shelley best known for Frankenstein. 
 
While October may cause people to invoke feelings of dread or fright, the fear of the LORD is the exact opposite of terror. 
 
The fear of the LORD is not a scary fear. The fear of the Lord is a holy reverence born in the heart. It is a reverence to His majesty and for His holiness. He is holy, we are not. This God-centeredness in the heart gives us a fresh, upside-down perspective on which to view the world. 
 
As a young parent, I remember hearing a Pastor say, your children have to have a healthy fear and respect for you as their parents, or they will never have a healthy fear and respect for their Heavenly Father. You are the first step in teaching them the “fear of the LORD.” 
 
The fear of the LORD is central to having a right relationship with God because “The fear of the LORD is the beginning of wisdom. A good understanding have all those who keep His commandments. His praise endures forever.” Psalm 111:10 (NASB) 
 
Wisdom, otherwise known as knowledge applied, begins with the fear of the LORD. When you have wisdom, it means you are more than book smart, you are also street smart. 
 
This feeling of awe is different from when you stand on top of a mountain or in the sand at the foot of the ocean in wonder as you observe the vast views. Nature is God’s beautiful creation, but nature is not personal. 
 
This fear is also completely different than an abusive parent from whom one wants to run away. That goes back to terror or dread. 
 
You can not run from your all-knowing, all-loving Father. Remember, He is omnipresent and omniscient. The only direction to run is towards your Heavenly Father’s loving arms. He will embrace you every. single. time. 
 
The fear of the LORD is a reverent AWE or overwhelming wonder that stretches from the heart of a believer up to the heart of The Father. It’s the quickening of the heart when you realize He planned for you before you were born and created you perfectly for “such a time as this.” 
 
At first, the fear produced in awe may appear to dictate obedience, but not because we have to follow Him, rather because we overwhelmingly want to. 
 
The position of a believer’s heart is humbled in His mighty and holy presence. The Creator of all creation adores you. The fruit of humility is obedience. Who doesn’t want to please an awesome, majestic Father who always has your best interests in mind? 
 
Our Heavenly Father, holy and sacred, sent His Son to the world to die. First Jesus walked with us to show us how to live in holy reverence. Jesus never considered Himself more important than anyone else including His Father. In fact, He humbled Himself on the cross to die for mankind, so we could be covered with the blood of His grace and mercy. 
 
To a believer, a healthy fear of the LORD brings holy contentment. 
 
“The LORD is my shepherd, I shall not want.” Psalm 23:1 (NASB) Holy contentment is contagious! Why aren’t you shaken by what is happening in the world? Why does the news not bother you? Why are you not scared of what you can see? Why are you so content? 
 
Because God is good. “Come and hear all who fear God and I will tell of what He has done for my soul.” Psalm 66:16 (NASB) 
 
I know He has protected me. 
I know He has fought battles for me I cannot see. 
I know He watches out for my children who are my heart. 
I know this, because He gave His heart, or His child, for me. 
 
“The love of God has wrapped us round from before the foundations of the world. If we fear Him–that is, if we are brought to our knees before Him, reverence and worship Him in absolute assurance of his sovereignty, we cannot possibly be afraid of anything else. To love God is to destroy all other fear.”—Elisabeth Elliot

Holy Fear {Psalm 34:9-11}

“The angel of the LORD encamps around those who fear Him, and rescues them.” ‭‭Psalm‬ ‭34:7‬ (‭NASB)‬‬  The angel of the LORD encamps & rescues.  
 
The Psalmist David was a student of the Word of God. He remembered the stories of how God’s angels protected the Israelites in the past.  
 
David remembered how, “The angel of the Lord appeared to Moses in a blazing fire from the midst of a bush; and he looked, and behold, the bush was burning with fire, yet the bush was not consumed.” Exodus 3:2 (NASB)  
 
David remembered how Moses was guided by the angel of God during the Exodus from Egypt, “The angel of God, who had been going before the camp of Israel, moved and went behind them; and the pillar of cloud moved from before them and stood behind them.” Exodus 14:19 (NASB)  
 
David knew, “The captain of the LORD'S host said to Joshua, ‘Remove your sandals from your feet, for the place where you are standing is holy.’ And Joshua did so.” Joshua 5:15 (NASB)  
 
David remembered that Jacob wrestled with an angel (Genesis 33:24).  From the Scriptures, David understood angels are created beings “Psalm 148:2,5 ‘Praise him, all his angels, praise him, all his heavenly hosts… Let them praise the name of the LORD, for he commanded and they were created.’”  
  
Angels act as messengers of God. In Hebrew malakh and ἄγγελος AN-GA-LAS in Greek which means “messenger.” So the name angels is actually a job title.  
 
Angels praise God! Angels serve God! Angels communicate God’s messages! Angels minister to believers! 
 
Has someone ever appeared out of the blue to help you, and then disappear wanting no reward in return? Sometimes they show up in human form, “Do not neglect to show hospitality to strangers, for by this some have entertained angels without knowing it.” Hebrews 13:2 (NASB)  
 
 David felt comfort in knowing watch was being kept for him on every side! The angel of the Lord encamped around him!  
 
The God of angel armies is always on my side.  And He is on your side as well.  May you remember where the angel of God has shown up in the past, and place your hope in Him as He encamps around you and rescues you! 
 
When Christ returns, angels will come with him as a great army accompanying their King and Lord (Matthew 16:27, Luke 9:26, 2 Thessalonians 1:7).

Angels Encamp & Rescue {Psalm 34:7}

I am walking through Psalm 34 with you on Monday mornings. Last week I studied one of my favorite verses in the entire Bible, “They looked to Him and were radiant, and their faces will never be ashamed.” Psalm 34:5 (NASB) 
 
The way to radiate Light is for God to place the Light of the World within you the moment you believe in His Son. We can’t help but radiate His light when we spend time with Him because He fills our Spirits so full they overflow! 
 
Let’s remember where the Psalmist David was when he penned Psalm 34. Scared for his life, David pretended he was mad and he escaped to hide in a cave. Imagine what was going through David’s mind. Anointed as king at a young age, he continued his role as shepherd, defeated Goliath, and waited for the fulfillment of his calling. 
 
God led David through a waiting process, and through the process, David held on tightly to his faith. 
 
In the waiting, David’s confidence did not come from his job. 
In the waiting, David’s confidence did not come from man. 
In the waiting, David’s confidence came from his Heavenly Father. 
 
The process of waiting put David’s heart in a position of surrender to His Heavenly Father with a posture of great humility. 
 
We connect well with David’s Psalms because He verbalizes the mental, emotional, and spiritual process he goes through while loving God, surrendering to God, and struggling with his footing in this crazy world. We understand his heart and his words help our hearts to take the same posture. 
 
“This poor man cried, and the LORD heard him and saved him out of all his troubles.” Psalm 34:6 (NASB) 
 
In Psalm 34, David moves from writing to the reader in the third person, to realizing what God did for Him personally. You can sense the change of tone and emotion in his words. In this first-person language, David says “who am I” that you heard me and delivered me? It’s as if David is saying, “The Lord heard me. He heard ME! He listened to me and then, He saved me from all my troubles.” 
 
And then it hit me, “The Lord heard me. He heard ME! He listened to me and He saved me from all my troubles.” 
 
How beautiful it is when you realize God heard you. Yes! He heard you and HE listened to YOU! And He saved you from all of your troubles. 
 
This realization does make one come to the point of saying, WHO AM I? 
 
“Who am I that the highest King Would welcome me? I was lost but He brought me in Oh His love for me, Oh His love for me.” --Hillsong 
 
In Exodus 3, Moses said the same thing to God when God got Moses’s attention through a burning bush. Moses hid his face from God because he did not feel worthy of God’s attention. His exact words were, “Who am I?” And God answered, “I AM WHO I AM.” God’s name, YAHWEH, which means “I AM.” God reminds Moses, He is the Creator God and He will go before him. 
 
Jesus kept His eyes on God even through the most difficult times. 
We keep our eyes on Jesus even through the most difficult times. 
Jesus left a legacy of humility because He understood the big picture. 
We live a life of humility when we come to understand the big picture. 
 
Before honor, comes humility. 
Trust the process. 
 
David’s circumstances were beyond his control. 
Jesus’s circumstances were beyond his control. 
And today, our circumstances are beyond our control. 
 
You cannot move to a place of honor, without traveling down the path of humility. Before honor, comes humility. 
Trust the process.
