The desolation. How unproductive a beautiful strip of land could become, could so completely fall apart. But God did it with earthquakes. He did it with pestilence. He did it with drought. It stopped raining. All right, so here it is all foretold almost 1,000 years ahead of time. Now verse 33:

Well, what was the Sabbath in Israel's history? They had to leave the land fallow every seventh year. From the time that they came in under Joshua, they had to leave it fallow. God said, "I'll give you enough extra on the sixth year and the first year that you won't miss it." But did they believe God? No. They kept on farming it. They kept on taking out the fruit. So God says it's going to get them. All right, here it is. So when they're out of the land, and there's no production, there's no farming, there's no fruit trees growing, "Then shall the land rest and enjoy her (What?) Sabbaths."

Which it did. The boots of the Roman soldiers were fearsome. All right, now verse 41:

"And whereas thou sawest the feet and toes, part of potters' clay, and part of iron, (In other words, it is an amalgamation that does not really hold.) the kingdom shall be divided; but there shall be in it (That is this coming kingdom.) the strength of iron, forasmuch as thou sawest the iron mixed with miry clay." Now the miry means something like muddy. When you take clay and add water to it, you've got a muddy mixture. All right, now then verse 42:

Here we have Peter ministering to this house full of Romans, military at that. Now you know, there wasn't much spirituality in the Roman military, was there? But yet miraculously the Spirit worked upon Cornelius and caused him to send some of his underlings down to find Peter. They brought Peter up. Of course Peter was still on the same premise that he had from the time of Christ's earthly ministry, and that was what we call the Gospel of the Kingdom, and that was believing that Jesus was that promised Messiah and coming king, period. 
 
Even though Jesus Christ had now been crucified, buried, and risen; Peter does not proclaim faith in that for salvation, as we must do today in the Age of Grace. All Peter proclaims is that even though their King had been crucified, He had been raised from the dead, and He was still capable of being the King. That's why it's called the Gospel of the Kingdom. 
 
Now, again, a lot of people get all confused. They think that's still a valid gospel today.

Psalms 51:11 
 
"Cast me not away from thy presence; and take not thy Holy Spirit from me." Now, here is a good example of rightly dividing Scripture. Does that apply to us today? 
 
Do you and I even have the right to say something like that? I'm not tricking you. NO! No! God can't take the Holy Spirit from us once He's been given, because we have that kind of assurance that David himself didn't have. The Holy Spirit's modus operandi all the way up through the Old Testament was: He could come upon somebody and leave them. My best example of that is Samson. When the Holy Spirit was upon Samson, what could he do? Well, the impossible. But when old Delilah wiggled it out of him, what happened? The Holy Spirit left. And what was Samson? No more than any other Jew in Israel. But when the Holy Spirit came back upon him, he was able to pull down the temple.

Galatians 4:4a 
 
"But when the fullness of the time was come, (What's the next part?) God sent forth His Son,..." Now, from the time the prophets stopped writing and dealing with Israel, which was Malachi, how long was it before the angel appeared to Mary and John the Baptist? How long? Four hundred years of total silence. 
 
Israel had never experienced that kind of silence in her history. So what do you suppose a lot of them began to think? It's not going to happen. God has forgotten all about us. But, beloved, it did. When the fullness of time was come, God moved and Christ appeared. It's the same way today. Oh, you know it's been nineteen hundred and some years now, and a lot of people have almost given up and think that this is never going to happen. Don't you believe it, because it is! I don't know when. It may be a long time, yet. I can't see how it can, but it could be. God is timeless. But I'll tell you, beloved, one day it's going to happen. God's going to move. All right, now where was I?

I think if anything has thrilled me in this series of lessons on the incarnation, it is that it brings home to me once again that had God not become flesh, we never would have had salvation. Do you know that? We'd have been doomed automatically. And at the same time, they came up with another thought. Now we know that the Old Testament, especially—let's go back and look at it. I really didn't intend to do this. I may even have to look and see if I can find it—Deuteronomy chapter 6 verse 4. This is the premise of most of the Jews' thinking even today. That's why an Orthodox Jew cannot swallow the New Testament, because they call our concept of a triune God polytheism. Oh, you're worshiping more than one God, and we don't. All right, here's their reasoning. 
 
Deuteronomy 6:4 
 
"Hear, O Israel: The LORD our God (Is what?) is one LORD:" They can't get away from that. But now have you ever stopped to analyze this whole idea of a triune God? Have you ever stopped to think—could God have precipitated our great plan of salvation if there'd been only one person of the Godhead? Have you ever thought about that? What if there'd only been one person of the Godhead? Let's just say God the Father. Could He have consummated this glorious plan of salvation? Well, He could have gone part way, but what would He have done when He was ready to die? He would have to be resurrected. Who would do it? See, it falls over.

"When I would have healed Israel, (the Northern Kingdom) then the iniquity of Ephraim (That's the other name for the Northern Kingdom.) was discovered, (In other words, God couldn't heal them because they still were not turning from their idolatry.) and the wickedness of Samaria: (Now, Samaria was Jews.) for they commit falsehood; and the thief cometh in, and the troops of robbers spoileth without." Do you see what a society they had become? It was rotten to the core. That's what the Scripture calls them. 
 
Hosea 7:2-4 
 
"And they consider not in their hearts that I remember all their wickedness: now their own doings have beset them about; they are before my face. 3. They make the king (Here we come again, we go right to the top of the political spectrum.) glad with their wickedness, (He saw nothing wrong with all the rot that they were doing.) and the princes (That is the next echelon below the king.) with their lies. 4. They are all adulterers, (They were all mixing their Judaism with idolatry.) as an oven heated by the baker, who ceaseth from raising (that is the dough) after he hath kneaded the dough, until it be leavened."

First of all for a nation and I'm constantly keeping our own beloved America in the back of my mind as I read this.  We are a perfect parallel with the Nation of Israel. Oh, of course, we haven't got a Temple. We haven't got the prophets. But nevertheless, we've got the Word of God in every home. Our government has been saturated with it.

Hosea 3:5a 
 
"Afterward shall the children of Israel return, (They're going to come back from this time out in the dispersion.) and seek the LORD their God, and David their king;..." 
 
Now here again, don't get confused with that, because Christ in Scripture is the Son of David. Although some teach that David may rule and Christ over David--I'm not going to make a big argument of it--but I don't think so. I think Christ is going to rule from David's throne on Mount Zion in Jerusalem.

"...and shall fear the LORD and his goodness in the latter days." Well, that's where we are. We're in the latter days, I think, of God's program for Israel and for the world. 
 
All right, now let's jump into chapter 4. Again, God's going to come right back and deal with Israel's sin, and all their sin is associated with their idolatry. I'll point that out as we come to it. Verse 1

"Afterward shall the children of Israel return, (They're going to come back from this time out in the dispersion.) and seek the LORD their God, and David their king;..."

"For the children of Israel shall abide many days without a king, and without a prince, and without a sacrifice, and without an image, and without an ephod, and without teraphim:" In other words, they had nothing of their religion, as much as I hate to use the word. All right, then the key word in verse 5 is—"Afterward..." All right, but we're not going to look at the "afterward" yet, until we go back and finish some of those verses with regard to all those 1900 and some years that Israel was scattered into the nations of the world. 
 
All right, come back where you were with the dry bones in Ezekiel 37 verse 11. Here's where we have the interpretation of this vision. 
 
Ezekiel 37:11 
 
"Then he (the LORD) said unto me, (the prophet) Son of man, these bones are the whole house of Israel: (Now that tells you right up front that ten tribes are not lost. All Twelve Tribes are still involved even at this point in time.) behold, they say, Our bones are dried, and our hope is lost: we are cut off for our parts." In other words, that was when they were out amongst the Gentile world--verse 12. 
 
Ezekiel 37:12a 
 
"Therefore, prophesy and say unto them, (these scattered Jews) Thus saith the Lord GOD; Behold, O my people, I will open your graves,..." Now, the best way I can explain that in recent history was when the Soviet Union collapsed, and one of the first results of that collapse was permission for the Jews to immigrate out and down to Israel or wherever. 
 
It was a providential thing. As soon as the Jews had the opportunity,

Now, I want you to go back to Jeremiah 44. You'll see what I'm talking about. I might come back here again even later, before we get through Hosea. But Jeremiah 44 and let's use verse 19, because I'm going to use some of the other verses later on. Now, this again is the response of idolatrous Israel. 
 
Jeremiah 44:19a 
 
"And when we burned incense to the queen of heaven, (Now, that's the female goddess, usually Astarte.) and poured out drink-offerings unto her, did we make her (What?) cakes..." Now, the better translation for flagons of wine would have been grape cakes. In other words, they actually took a grape-flavored cake and offered it on their altars to this female goddess. So, here's where we get the comparison of Scripture, "did we make her cakes to worship her, and pour out drink-offerings unto her,..." 
 
All right, back to Hosea once again, chapter 3. These Israelites -- now you've got to remember

Because the first time you heard about Achor -- who knows what it was associated with? Achan -- it was the first city after Jericho, after they came into the Promised Land. They were told to go up and destroy the city of Ai, which evidently was a materially well-to-do city. God told them to destroy all the material goods. He warned them -- don't even take a nickel's worth of anything. 
 
But you see, Achan, a good Jew, thought he could get away with it. You remember what he did.

"Therefore, behold, (This is God speaking to the Nation through the prophet.  God said,) I will allure her, (In other words, just like a suitor.) I will allure her, and bring her into the wilderness, and speak comfortably unto her." Now, what I can't comprehend is how even the most biblically illiterate can forget the fact that Jesus was born in Bethlehem. And goodness sakes, where was Bethlehem? In present day Israel. All the Old Testament events that take place, where in the world were they? In Africa? In Europe? In the Orient? No. It all took place in what's present day Israel. How can people be so ignorant of that? I can't comprehend it.

"But I will have mercy upon the house of Judah, (that's the Southern two tribes, remember, where Hosea is ministering.) and will save them by the LORD their God, and will not save them by bow, nor by sword, nor by battle, by horses, nor by horsemen." But rather by His own intrinsic Sovereign power. 
 
Now, let's be reminded that the Southern Kingdom lasted about a hundred years longer than the Northern Kingdom. Israel, the Ten Tribes, will be overrun by the Syrians about a hundred years before Judah goes under the hand of the Babylonians. Now I don't think, if I'm remembering correctly, I did not really finish our verses back there in II Kings. I'm going to bring you back here again, if I may, so that you see why God's patience ran out with the Ten Tribes that we are now calling Israel.

"The beginning of the word of the LORD by Hosea. And the LORD said to Hosea, Go, take unto thee a wife of whoredoms (the idolatrous Northern Kingdom) and children of whoredoms: for the land hath committed great whoredom, departing from the LORD." Now, lest you think that I am barking out of left field, let's go up to the New Testament a minute. 
 
I wasn't going to do this, but I think maybe we should. Go up to Colossians; all the way up to Paul's little letter to the Colossians chapter 3 verse 5. Remember from our last program we were stressing that the very first of the Ten Commandments was "Thou shalt have no other gods before me. Thou shalt not bow down to them." 
 
So, idolatry and unbelief, I guess, are the two biggest controversies that God has with the human race. Not just with Israel but with everyone. All right, now look what Paul writes to the Gentiles at Colossi. In Colossians chapter 3 verse 5 and I'm making the point why God hates idolatry. Paul, of course, is writing to you and me as believers, and he says: 
 
Colossians 3:5 
 
"Mortify (or put to death) therefore your members which are upon the earth; (That is, the members of this physical body -- the appetites of it -- put it to death. And what are they?) fornication, (That, of course, is sexual immorality.) uncleanness, inordinate (or unnatural) affection, evil concupiscence, (In other words, just constantly thinking and talking on the wrong side of the coin. And here it comes--) and covetousness, which is (What?) idolatry." Have you ever thought of it that way?

Everything from especially the call of Abraham all the way through to the very end, if you drop Paul's epistles out, just take Paul's church letters out of the picture for the time being, and you will have God dealing with Israel in view of the King and the Kingdom. By the way, it won't be long and we'll be finishing Hebrews in the daily program. That's especially for you here in the audience. We'll be finishing Hebrews, and for goodness sakes be sure you catch my introduction to James and Peter and John. We used four programs, I think, just for introduction. What I'm showing is just that. That all the way through Scripture everything is God dealing with Israel in view of the King and the Kingdom. 
 
Now, they rejected it at His first coming. Peter and the Eleven pick it up in the early Book of Acts, and it's still the same premise that if they would repent of their sin of crucifying their Messiah, God would send Jesus Christ. Well, for what purpose? To bring in the Kingdom. But, Peter says, the Tribulation has to come first. See, they're not going to drop anything out of prophecy. Then when the King and the Kingdom would come, that would take us to eternity. 
 
But, God opened that timeline and let Israel go into the dispersion and saved the Apostle Paul in Acts chapter 9. Then we have other references that show that He's going to call out a group of Gentiles for His name's sake and prepare them to be God's people for eternity without Israel. Israel is gone on into dispersion, and the Gospel of Grace is now gone to the whole human race, calling out this main harvest, which I feel is the Body of Christ.

Now, I'm again going to review the big picture.
