Here are some study questions based on this passage: 
 
1) In what way do the four living creatures show what all creation was created to do (vs. 9)? Compare Romans 1:21 - similar language to vs. 9, although reversed among fallen creatures. 
2) Do you worship God for His sovereignty as "him who is seated on the throne" (vs. 9)? Do you merely agree with what the Bible teaches about God's sovereignty over creation (vs. 11) and in salvation (Ephesians 1:3-14), or do you delight in it? Recall the testimony of Jonathan Edwards. 
3) How do the 24 elders show their deep reverence for God as they worship? What does this tell us about how worship is expressed? In what ways does the Bible talk about what we do with our bodies in worship? How can we grow in expressing "body language" in worship that reflects an appropriate reverence for God? 
4) From vs. 11 and Romans 11:36, is it biblical to say that God's highest purpose for all creation and His ultimate reason for creating all things is to bring Him glory? 
5) What is significant about the phrase "by your will they existed and were created" (vs. 11)? See also Ephesians 1:5, 11, where our salvation is set in the context of something far broader and bigger than our own lives - God's eternal and comprehensive will by which He reigns over all things. 
 
Finally, read through this passage and spend time meditating/reflecting on how its truth should: 
1) Deepen our humility before God and our dependence on God 
2) Increase our trust in God for our full earthly and eternal security 
3) Shape our worship and strengthen our awe and praise of God for who He is

Bible Study - Revelation 4:9-11

Introduction: Jesus’ knowledge of His looming death (see Matthew 26:2, 13, 18, 21, 24, 26-29, 31-32, 34, 45, 54, 56, 64). What does this tell us? 
 
1) The darkness over the whole land shows God’s judgment taking place at the death of His Son (27:45; see Amos 8:9-10) 
 
2) The cry of Jesus from the cross shows that He is no ordinary man, but the Son of God (27:46; see Psalm 22:1) 
 
a. A cry of anguish 
b. A cry of abandonment 
 
3) The human misunderstanding that fulfills Scripture shows that this is the death of the Son of God (27:47-49) 
 
4) The moment of Jesus’ death shows that He is no mere man, but the Son of God (27:50) 
 
5) The torn veil foreshadows God’s destruction of the temple because of the death of His Son (27:51; see Matt. 23:38; 24:2; also 12:6; 26:61; 27:40)

2) What does the storm imagery coming forth from God's throne signify? See also Exodus 19:16; Revelation 8:5, 11:19, 16:18. 
3) How should we understand the "seven burning torches of fire, which are the seven spirits of God"? What is this communicating about the Holy Spirit? 
4) What is pictured by "the sea of glass" in front of God's throne?

In this first virtual Bible study, we began by thinking about why the visions of Revelation are designed to be an encouragement to the churches of the first century and today. If chapters 1-3 showed us the earthly situation of the churches from a heavenly perspective, chapters 4-5 show us the heavenly situation from a heavenly perspective. 
 
In chapter 4, John is given a vision of the Lord God Almighty on His throne in heaven, who is endlessly praised as the holy and eternal Creator and Ruler of all. This vision opens a window into two realities: 1) God's sovereignty over all things He created; 2) God's worthiness to receive unceasing worship. We looked in depth at verses 1-3 as John was summoned to God's heavenly throne room (vs. 1) and what he saw of the throne of God (vss. 2-3). 
 
"Blessed is the one who reads the words of this prophecy, and blessed are all those who hear, and who keep what is written in it, for the time is near." (Revelation 1:3). 
 
Here are some study questions for these verses: 
 
1) In light of what chapters 2-3 tell us about what churches and believers were going through at the end of the first century, why did they need to hear John's report of the vision of God's throne room that was given to him? How would it have encouraged them? 
2) Why is chapter 4 central to the whole book of Revelation? 
3) What is the significance of the word "must" (vs. 1)? 
4) What is conveyed by the word and image "throne" (vs. 2)? 
5) What do the stones and jewels signify (vs. 3)?
