Isaiah has been called the messianic prophet because of the number of his predictions about the coming Messiah. Of all the Old Testament writings that foretell Christ, Isaiah 52 and 53 are the pinnacle. They capture the person and work of Christ and atoning sacrifice with precision and clarity like no other text. Seven hundred years before Jesus was born, His death was announced and detailed. Here Isaiah calls us to look on this servant and be astonished for six reasons.

To foretell someone’s death seems morbid and macabre—unless that someone’s death will bring life to the world. The prophet Isaiah predicted the virgin birth, the sinless life, and the atoning death of the Son of God. Jesus Christ is the personification of hope for all who receive Him; He is "Hope Foretold". In this section of Scripture, we are on holy ground as we muse over the prediction of the death of our great Sin-Bearer. (See Revelation 13:8.)

Lord, make us valliant witnesses to the faith of the church and inspire us to speak the truth. Permit us to be united but not closed, humble but not fearful, simple but not naive, thoughtful but not overbearing, respectful of others but boldly your disciples. May we bear into Your world the hope of God, which is Christ the Lord, who rose from the dead and lives and reigns with the Father and the Holy Spirit, one God forever.
