Don't Hold Back From Being Served And Being A Servant (Mark 10:32-45) || David Platt

Mark 10:32-45 
 
VERSE OF THE DAY: "Not so with you. Instead, whoever wants to become great among you must be your servant." —Mark 10:43 
 
In this passage, Jesus foretells his death and resurrection a THIRD time, then James and John literally said to Jesus, "We want You to do for us whatever we ask of you." Jesus didn't say "yes," but He said, "What do you want Me to do for you?" How often do you go straight into God's presence and just tell Him the things you want Him to do for you? Notice He didn't give them what they demanded but reminded them of His upside down Kingdom. 
 
REFLECTION: Serve to Excel 
 
• Standing out means helping out. 
• Be someone who adds value to others. 
• You’re at your most valuable when you’re making what others do 
more valuable. 
• You’re at your least valuable when you try to make it all about you. 
• Selfishness serves no one. 
• Selflessness serves many. 
 
Q's: When was the last time you stepped out and served someone else? What was the result? What is one thing you can do to serve someone today?

Jesus had just explained how to inherit eternal life to His disciples and those who were present in giving up everything and coming and following Him as His disciples who walk and live the way He exampled and making Jesus Savior, Lord, and Teacher of our lives. Jesus, on their way to Jerusalem closer and closer to the cross of His crucifixion, with Jesus leading the way, He declares His final prediction of His death, burial, and resurrection and this time He explains it in more details than before. 
 
As Jesus’s actions were speaking louder than His words throughout the book of Mark, we are given a front row seat of how Jesus handled sufferings and that to our astonishment and even our fear as the disciples and those who were following Jesus expressed. Giving up everything to come and follow Jesus is not without sufferings as exampled in the previous text and described and insinuated by Jesus of leaving home or brothers or sisters or mother or father or children or fields for Jesus and His gospel— along with persecutions to inherit eternal life by grace through faith in the finished work of Jesus is a call and awareness of sufferings no matter how you look at it or brave and courageous you may presume to be. Following Jesus is choosing a mission and life of sufferings but also a life of resurrection, purpose, and eternal riches now and into eternity. Therefore, we must learn the hope that goes beyond the scope of sufferings through the actions that speak louder than the words of our great Savior and Suffering Messiah who is the King of kings and Lord of Lords.

Jesus Predicts His Death (32-34) 
o Verse 33 – Review Daniel 7:13-14 and discuss the title Son of Man 
o Verse 33 – “Will be delivered” is a divine passive. How should we think about the role of 
God, Jewish leaders, and the Romans in the events of Christ’s death? 
Jesus’ Purpose (35-45) 
o Verse 38 – Jesus is using metaphors to describe His death on the cross 
o Verses 42-43 – In contrasting greatness in the world with greatness in the kingdom, how 
does Jesus change our understanding of how to engage with other people? 
o Verse 45 – Ransom is a term that was used for paying off the debt of a slave or prisoner 
Jesus and Bartimaeus (46-52) 
o Verse 46 – Jericho was approximately 20 miles from Jerusalem. It is also the location of 
Jesus’ encounter with Zacchaeus, and the road between Jerusalem and Jericho is the 
setting for the parable of the Good Samaritan 
o Verse 47 – The title Son of David is only used twice in Mark and only in this chapter. It is 
used extensively in Matthew’s gospel although it is alluded to in Mark 11:9-10. The title 
has messianic significance as affirming Jesus’ place as the rightful king in David’s lineage 
o Verse 48 – Why do you think there is a pattern of people trying to silence the 
“insignificant” in Mark (ie: children multiple times, a blind beggar)? 
o Verse 51 – Notice the same question is asked of Bartimaeus as James and John 
o Verse 52 – What do you think was Bartimaeus’ reason for following and not going?

- Why is it significant that Jesus is leading the way to Jerusalem? How does this intersect with 
providence and provide a framework for how we live? 
- What is the difference between how the world understands greatness and how people in 
the kingdom understand greatness? How do we seek to be great by using people and not 
serving them?
