Faith Bible Church

The Gospel preached by Paul did not have its source in man but came directly from Christ. The authentic Gospel of grace puts its focus on the perfect sacrifice of Jesus and there is nothing to add to it. The gospel is diluted and altered when man adds to what Jesus has accomplished. Traditions are poor substitutes for relationship. When we move from done to do we put the focus upon ourselves and we become religious, putting aside a responsive relationship with His indwelling presence to what we are doing for Him and how we are striving for a righteousness apart from Him. Paul was convinced he was serving the will of God while persecuting the church until he met Jesus on the road to Damascus and there he understood his own brokenness and need for a Savior. The true Gospel is always about the Christ and the gospel of men is focused on the Christian.

"The Gospel of Christ" Galatians 1:11-14

Isaiah here describes the reign of Jesus as the Lamb of God. When Jesus was early in His ministry John the Baptist pointed his followers to Jesus and proclaimed, "Behold the Lamb of God who takes away the sins of the world." But the Jewish people weren't looking for a lamb they were looking for a great king who would overthrow the power of Rome. They didn't realize that Jesus had a more urgent issue to deal with than Rome. He came to deal with our sin. He reign over us and one day over all of creation as the Lamb. He reigns with a steadfast love and welcomes all the rejected and broken hearted.

Isaiah here describes the reign of Jesus as the Lamb of God.  When Jesus was early in His ministry John the Baptist pointed his followers to Jesus and proclaimed, "Behold the Lamb of God who takes away the sins of the world." "The Lamb The Ruler" Isaiah 16:1-5

This passage partially describes the fall of Lucifer. It was all rooted in "I will." Satan was deceived by pride and fell by asserting his own desires and will. In the end he will be cast into the lake of fire for eternal destruction. Jesus teaches us the opposite. In the garden before going to the cross He prayed asking His Father if there was another way but always, "not my will yours." Three times he prayed a prayer of surrender. So, its easy for us to discern when we are being influenced by Satan and when we are living under the power of the Spirit simply by our attitude. If it is all about "I will," it's Satan. If our heart is, "not my will yours" then the Spirit of Christ. Satan's self assertion always leads to destruction and surrender to His indwelling presence always leads to our ultimate good.

"I Will" Isaiah 14:12-16

In this chapter Isaiah foretells of the judgment that will come upon Assyria even though they are being used by God to accomplish His will in discipling Israel. They are about to go into captivity and the Lord promises them a remnant will return. In the middle of the chapter verse 15 ask the question, should the creation question the creator? We must remember there is so much we don't understand from our very limited perspective but we trust that God is sovereign over all and we know that He is loving, good, merciful and just always. The things we see happening may not seem right to us but we are the creation and have no right to question the creator. Pride causes us to question Him and humility understand that we are incapable of understanding fully what the Most High God is doing with His creation.

"Questioning God" Isaiah 10:15

The Lord warned Isaiah not to follow the path of rebellious Israel. They were on path of destruction. The rebellious people were full of fear and dread. We who are His children have no need to fear or dread for He is our God and working on our behalf. The Lord was a stumbling block to rebellious Israel and Jesus was the final stumbling block for them and our salvation.

"Don't Walk in the Way of this People" Isaiah 8:11-15

In chapter 3 Isaiah declares woe and judgment of the people. The people had become so brazen in their sin, they no longer hid it but celebrated it. They were in complete defiance of God's presence. To sin is to bring evil upon one's self. Israel would suffer greatly for their rebellion. We must never forget how sin punishes the sinner. As born-again children of God we must never lose sight of the incredible responsibility we each have to live in surrendered obedience to His indwelling presence all how Him to be glorified in the world. How we live in the world is truly important.

John like Paul divides all of humanity into two groups. Those who are the children of God by being born again by the Spirit and those who are of the world. To be born of God through faith in the death, burial and resurrection of Jesus is have God as Father and be His beloved child. In Him we overcome the evil one and the false prophets. We have been blessed with the great privilege to walk in a responsive relationship with His indwelling presence. Receiving His agape love transforms our lives and liberates us to giving agape love to others.

"You Have Overcome" 1 John 4:4-7

In the second chapter Isaiah warns of the Day of the Lord in which He is going to deal with the idolatry and pride of Israel. Pride caused them to be blind to their sin and foolishness. They forgot their place as the called out people of God and began bowing down to figures of their own creation. We are warned throughout the scriptures of the dangers of sinful pride. We have nothing to boast of and only Jesus is worthy of exaltation.

"Against All The Proud" Isaiah 2:8-17

John ask a very penetrating question for those who have been blessed with material goods. We all like to think the responsibility for meeting needs belongs to others. We each must recognize our personal responsibility to care for others. Instead of always looking to constantly advance our standard of living we should be looking for every opportunity to advance the kingdom of God in caring for others. If we see the great needs and close our hearts to those needs to live for our own advancement, does God's love live in them? It is completely inconsistent with our being the beloved children of God. We are warned to love in word or talk but in deed and truth. This is what gives us assurance in our hearts.

The wrath of God flows from the love of God for the preservation of His children and Kingdom. All that God does flows from who He is and He is love. He has no wrath for His children for Jesus has taken all of our sin and transgressions and put them upon Himself on the cross. The price is paid in full. He promises to discipline us, to prepare us for all that He has created us to be but that is very different than wrath. The sons of disobedience remain under judgment and wrath because they reject His love.

"Wrath from Love" Ephesians 5:6

John shows us that all of humanity belongs in one of two groups; the children of God and the children of the devil. To be born of God is to receive a new nature with a whole new way of living in which we practice righteousness and love others. God who is love, loves us and places His own life in us, so we can be vessels that express His love in the world. This love isn't primarily a feeling but an action. It is the selfless, sacrificial giving of ourselves for the benefit of others. Since He makes us righteous by His perfect sacrifice it is only natural that we would practice righteousness.

"Love is Evidence we are His Children" 1 John 3:10-13

The beauty of the Gospel is it not only sets us free from the penalty of sin; it allows us as those who are fully forgiven to indwelt with the very life of God. To be born of God is to have a new nature in Him so we are no longer sinners by nature nor slaves to sin. The devil is the author of sin and he tries to deceive us into living independent of God and to serve self. He chose to fall from his created purpose by asserting self, he said over and over again, "I will...." Jesus shows us the beauty of surrender to the Father in saying, "not my will yours." So, we know we are walking in the influence of the enemy when we assert ourselves and our will. We know we are walking in the Spirit when our constant heart cry is "not my will Yours!" There is no way for the true believer, indwelt by the life of God to live a lifestyle of sinning for it no longer suits us as His beloved and righteous children.

We are now liberated to a lifestyle of righteousness because He makes us righteous.

"Abiding Freedom from Sinning" 1 John 3:6-7

As the children of God we are to find life in Him. He is our source in all we face in this life. He is our empowerment. Just as He lives in us through faith, He desires that we would be vessels in which He expresses His life through us. We must not forget that everything we do in self-sufficiency is just wood, hay and stubble and will all burn up at the judgment. He gave His life to us that as we live in and from Him our lives are actively surrendering to all He desires to do through us and this is the beauty of being an agent in building His kingdom with gold, silver and precious stones. This is possible because He is our righteousness. He makes us righteous and living out righteousness is evidence we are His.

God didn't choose us because we were good or had something to offer Him or even what we might do for Him in the future. We were all alienated from God without hope. It is there He came to be our perfect sacrifice. Through His shed blood we are brought into intimate relationship with Him. He has removed every barrier to our walking in intimacy with Him. He Himself is our peace!

"He Himself our Peace" Ephesians 2:11-14

John calls us to live in the beautiful truth of the Gospel. The Gospel is far more than knowing Jesus came to die for our sins. He came to live in us and through us. We are His anointed priest to bring people to God and God to people. He came to give us who were spiritually dead, eternal life. Eternal life isn't something that happens when we die but what we receive when we believe. We must be a discerning people and understand that there are those who have been deceived and those who are deceiving. He's anointed us in part so that we will be able to discern truth from error.

"Love, Wisdom, Revelation" Ephesians 1:15-18

While the unbelieving seaman were trying to identify who was responsible for the danger they found themselves in they discover that Jonah is guilty of attempting to flee from the presence of the Lord. He identifies himself as a Hebrew and one the fears the creator God. This stirred up even greater fear amongst the seaman. While Jonah professes to fear the Lord, his actions say something very different and send a mixed message to the unbelievers that were trying to preserve his life. To fear the Lord is to hold Him in the highest regard and freely give ourselves to His will and purposes for our lives.

"I Fear the Lord" Jonah 1:7-10

To be one who is born of God and to know Him in an intimate relationship is far more than having a ticket to Heaven when we die. It is to experience a transformed life in which He is free to express His life through us. To be in relationship with Him is to have a life that looks and sounds like Him. It is a life that loves the unlovely. A life that is expressed as a fragrant offering and sacrifice to God. We are called to walk in His love and be vessels that express His love in the world.

There are those false teachers who boast about themselves and promote themselves in order to profit themselves and lead the church into deception. Just as Satan disguises himself as an angel of light but if full darkness and death so too his servants.
