Themes: The Psalmist recounts the mercies of God, how in ancient times God gave them victory over their enemies, points out their present miserable state, asserts that thy have not apostatized, appeals to God for the truth of his assertion, and calls upon the Lord for deliverance once more from their enemies. The title is the same as that in Psalm 42:1-11. The Syriac says it was "A Psalm of the sons of Korah, which the people and Moses sung at Horeb." Like the preceding psalm, this one appears to belong to the time of the captivity. (From the Adam Clarke Commentary, 1831) 
 
In Judaism: Verse 9 is found in the repetition of the Amidah (the Standing Prayer) during Rosh Hashanah (the Jewish New Year). Parts of verses 14 and 23 form a verse found in the long Tachanun (part of the morning and afternoon prayers) recited on Mondays and Thursdays, and verse 27 is the sixth verse of Hoshia Et Amecha (another group of prayers) in Pesukei Dezimra, which is the morning service. In Christianity: St. Paul quoted Psalm 44:22 in the Epistle to the Romans 8:36: “As it is written: "For your sake we face death all day long; we are considered as sheep to be slaughtered." The context of Paul’s quotation is that nothing can separate us from God’s love.

The psalmist makes another transition from verse 14 to verse 15. He places himself as a representative for the nation and approaches God on their behalf. He knows God has a covenant with his people and the psalmist declares to God in confidence that they have done all that has been required. He determines that no matter what God does to them or allows that they will not turn away.

15 My confusion is continually before me, and the shame of my face hath covered me, 
 
16 For the voice of him that reproacheth and blasphemeth; by reason of the enemy and avenger. 
 
17 All this is come upon us; yet have we not forgotten thee, neither have we dealt falsely in thy covenant. 
 
18 Our heart is not turned back, neither have our steps declined from thy way; 
 
19 Though thou hast sore broken us in the place of dragons, and covered us with the shadow of death. 
 
20 If we have forgotten the name of our God, or stretched out our hands to a strange god; 
 
21 Shall not God search this out? for he knoweth the secrets of the heart. 
 
22 Yea, for thy sake are we killed all the day long; we are counted as sheep for the slaughter. 
 
23 Awake, why sleepest thou, O Lord? arise, cast us not off for ever. 
 
24 Wherefore hidest thou thy face, and forgettest our affliction and our oppression? 
 
25 For our soul is bowed down to the dust: our belly cleaveth unto the earth. 
 
26 Arise for our help, and redeem us for thy mercies' sake.

Hello, this is the Silver Watchman. 
On this channel, all are welcome to watch. I do my personal best to improve every video, every week. Uploads are once (or more a week depending on scheduling) and happen between Wednesday and Saturday. On here I typically either read the Bible, try to inspire you, or give you an update on my life (all the while playing video games). Ultimately though, I am a Watchman who is doing his best to prepare the world (or whoever wants to listen) for the Second coming of Jesus Christ.
