Merely Increases Responsibility 
2:1–6 Those who know what is right and judge others are not thereby 
exonerated from their own guilt—knowledge (by itself) 
produces arrogance (1 Cor. 8:1)—rather than repentance. All 
this applied primarily—but not exclusively—to Jews, who have the Law of Moses. 
Five principles of God’s judgment 
1. 2:1–2 According to Truth—contained in God’s Word (John 17:17)— 
compare John 12:47–48; Ps. 119:160 
2. 2:6 According to Deeds—compare 1 Peter 1:17—recorded in 
books (Rev. 20:12)—compare electromagnetic tapes 
3. 2:11 No Partiality (based on external “image”)—compare Deut.

Examples from Old Testament of those accepted: 
1. Queen of Sheba (Luke 11:31) 
2. Ninevites (Luke 11:32) compare Micah 6:8 
2:13–15, 26–27 Conscience may produce in Gentiles the same effect that the 
Law can produce in Jews—i.e. recognition of need of God’s 
mercy—but conscience may be weak (1 Cor. 8:7), seared (1 Tim. 4:2), defiled (Titus 1:15). 
2:17–25 Specific examples of hypocritical misuse of the law by Jews— 
bringing dishonor on God’s name. Can Christians be equally guilty? 
2:28–29 God accepts external ordinances only if they proceed from a 
sincere, believing heart (compare 1 Sam. 16:7). 
3:1–8 The increased privileges of the Jews correspondingly increase the guilt of their unbelief—by contrast, this highlights God’s faithfulness—but God’s righteousness makes His judgment 
certain. 
 
STAGE 3: 3:9 – 3:20 
The Whole World Accountable to God 
(Sums Up Stages 1 and 2) 
3:9–19 Quotations from Old Testament proving universal guilt of all 
mankind—taken from “the Law,” they apply primarily to those 
under the Law—no one is righteous, or understands, or seeks 
God, or does good—only God’s grace can initiate repentance 
and conversion (compare Eph. 2:1–7) 
3:20 Conclusion: the Law exposes sin (compare 7:7)—but no one 
can achieve righteousness by it. 
Parenthesis: 6 purposes for which the Law was given: 
(1) To show men the reality and power of sin (3:19–20; 7:7, 12–13)—first the diagnosis, then the medicine 
(2) To show men they are unable to achieve righteousness by their 
own efforts—Paul’s own experience (7:18–23) 
(3) To foretell and foreshadow the Savior (Messiah)—a Tutor (Gal. 3:24) 
a. Foretell: Deut. 18:18–19 and Acts 3:22–26 
b. Foreshadow: Passover Lamb—Exodus ch. 12; John 1:29; 1 Cor. 5:7 
(4) To keep Israel as a separate nation to which Messiah could 
come—“in custody”—“shut up” (Gal. 3:23)—compare Num. 23:9 
(5) To provide humanity with a pattern of a nation governed by just 
laws (Neh. 9:13–14) 
(6) To provide inexhaustible material for spiritual meditation (Ps. 1:1–3)

THE VERDICT IS GUILTY - RELIGIOUS MAN - ROM. 3:1-23 
In the last lesson we studied about God's wrath to come. But maybe we should stop right here, and from here to Chapter 3, God is in so many words, building His case against mankind just like a prosecuting attorney. God is going to categorize them into three areas. Then we're going to come in the next series of verses to the moral man or woman, and then we will come to the religious individual. God will build His case against the immoral segment of humanity. Let's look at verse 24 once more: 
Romans 1:24 
The pagan temples of the old Greek and Roman gods were just glorified houses of prostitution in the name of religion. So it just follows that when you come from the idolatry of verse 23 you now come to the immorality of verse 24. It seems anything that degenerates society, people will buy. I remember people telling me that, even in the depression, people would have money for that. Let's go on to verse 25. Romans 1:25a 
"Who changed the truth of God into a lie,..." 
God put His stamp of approval upon the marriage relationship way back in the Garden of Eden. God said, "It's honorable in all." So in God's restraint, all these things are not only normal, but they're what God has given. But man has taken the God-given things and used them under the influence of the adversary, Satan. 
Romans 1:25,26 
"Who changed the truth of God into a lie, and worshipped and served the creature more than the Creator, who is blessed for ever. So as a result of their original behavior of rejection, God now gives them up to something even worse. Romans 1:26b 
Remember that Satan started with the women in the Garden of Eden. Now in this portion of Scripture, God is talking about Israel here, His Covenant people. Jeremiah 44:15,16 
"Then all the men which knew that their wives had burned incense unto other gods (who was burning the incense? The women were!), and all the women that stood by, a great multitude, even all the people that dwelt in the land of Egypt in Pathros, answered Jeremiah, saying, `As for the word that thou hast spoken unto us in the name of the LORD, we will not hearken unto thee.'" 
Jeremiah 44:17 
A female goddess. Rather than that which was heterosexual immorality up in verse 24, they go into the vile affections of the homosexual lifestyle. 
Romans 1:27 
"And likewise also the men, leaving the natural use of the woman, burned in their lust one toward another; men with men working that which is unseemly, and receiving in themselves that recompense of their error which was meet." Come back to Genesis Chapter 19. This is the first time that the Scripture deals with what God calls an abomination. Genesis 19:1 
"AND there came two angels to Sodom at even;..." Now remember these two angels back in Chapter 18 were called men.

Genesis 19:2 
Now verse 4: 
Now back to Romans: Of course you know what happened to Sodom and Gomorrah. God destroyed it, and we will see here that the New Testament attests to it. Reading verse 27 again we find: 
Romans 1:27 
"And likewise also the men, leaving the natural use of the woman, burned in their lust one toward another; men with men working that which is unseemly, and receiving in themselves that recompense of their error which was meet." Let's look for a moment at II Peter Chapter 2. II Peter 2:5,6 
"...making them an ensample unto those that after should live ungodly;" 
We are never to forget that the reason God destroyed Sodom and Gomorrah was because of its homosexual lifestyle. And the world is never to forget it. God is telling the world tonight, "Look what I've done to Sodom and Gomorrah, look at what I've done to those kind of people. II Peter 2:7 
I'm simply saying but by the Grace of God I could be where they are, but on the other hand, by the Grace of God, they could be out of that lifestyle and be where I am, and that's where God wants you. That's why Paul makes it so plain in Romans Chapters 5 and 6 that where sin abounded, God's Grace can be greater. Now back to Romans Chapter 1 and verse 28: Once they get into this lifestyle which begins with an idolatrous heart. They may not have to fall down and worship a Buddha or something like that, but they have some sort of an anti-God attitude, or something else that takes God's place. 
Romans 1:28 
"And even as they did not like to retain God in their knowledge, God gave them over to a reprobate mind (you and I look at some of these things and wonder how can people do this? Well, God has removed all restraints from them, that's why. They don't care what people think, or what God thinks, but it was a judicial act of God to give them over to a reprobate mind), to do those things which are not convenient;" 
Now reading on down, these are not pretty verses. Romans 1:29-32 
We have to hold back these forces of iniquities until God comes.

Some people think they are moral enough to get to heaven and some people think they know enough about the Bible to get to heaven. In reality, you cannot earn your way to righteousness by moral living, and you can’t learn your way to righteousness through knowledge of God’s commands. You cannot achieve righteousness, but you can receive righteousness as the free gift of God when you put your faith in Jesus Christ. 
 
This past Sunday, I preached this sermon from Romans 3:1-20, which a passage where the Apostle Paul explains two ways in which a person cannot achieve a righteous standing before God, who will be our Judge. I hope this sermon video helps you understand God’s Word and the truth about how to be sure you are right with God through faith in His Son Jesus.

Sermon Title: “Two Ways You Can’t Become Righteous” 
 
Text: Romans 3:1-20 
“(1) Then what advantage has the Jew? Or what value is circumcision? (2) Much in every way. To begin with, the Jews were entrusted with the oracles of God. (3) What if some were unfaithful? Does their faithlessness nullify the faithfulness of God? (4) By no means! Let God be true though every one were a liar, as it is written, “That You may be justified in Your words, and prevail when You are judged.” 
 (5) But if our unrighteousness serves to show the righteousness of God, what shall we say? That God is unrighteous to inflict wrath upon us? (I speak in a human way.) (6) By no means! For then how could God judge the world? (7) But if through my lie God’s truth abounds to His glory, why am I still being condemned as a sinner? (8) And why not do evil that good may come?—as some people slanderously charge us with saying. Their condemnation is just. 
 (9) What then? Are we Jews any better off? No, not at all. For we have already charged that all, both Jews and Greeks are under sin, (10) as it is written: 
 “None is righteous, no, not one; 
 (11) no one understands; 
 no one seeks for God. 
 (12) All have turned aside; together they have become worthless; 
 no one does good, 
 not even one.” 
 (13) Their throat is an open grave; 
 they use their tongues to deceive.” 
 “The venom of asps is under their lips.” 
 (14) “Their mouth is full of curses and bitterness.” 
 (15) “Their feet are swift to shed blood; 
 (16) in their paths are ruin and misery, 
 (17) and the way of peace they have not known.” 
 (18) “There is not fear of God before their eyes.” 
 (19) Now we all know that whatever the law says it speaks to those who are under the law, so that every mouth may be stopped, and the whole world may be held accountable to God. (20) For by works of the law no human being will be justified in His sight, since through the law comes knowledge of sin.” 
 
Single Sentence Sermon Summary: You can’t earn or learn your way to righteousness.

Two ways you can’t become righteous: 
- Way #1: You can’t earn your way to righteousness by moral living. 
- Way #2: You can’t learn your way to righteousness by knowing God’s commands.

Some people think they are moral enough to get to heaven and some people think they know enough about the Bible to get to heaven. In reality, you cannot earn your way to righteousness by moral living, and you can’t learn your way to righteousness through knowledge of God’s commands. You cannot achieve righteousness, but you can receive righteousness as the free gift of God when you put your faith in Jesus Christ. 

This past Sunday, I preached this sermon from Romans 3:1-20, which a passage where the Apostle Paul explains two ways in which a person cannot achieve a righteous standing before God, who will be our Judge.
