Pastor Evan continues his series in Philippians reminding us that God intends for his people to be luminaries against a dark sky.  We are called to be credible messengers of hope and truth even during difficult times. When we face challenging circumstances, we can be naturally inclined to look for ways to selfishly escape our hardship. Our desire to get out of hardship can breed bad behavior that will undercut God’s work in our lives, and we lose credibility with others.  Jesus shows us another way to live.  With Jesus as our example, we can become luminaries, credible messengers as we willingly and humbly submit to God laying everything down for the sake of others even in challenging times.  Our circumstances do not have the final word in our lives. As we place ourselves in God’s hands, God will use calamity in our lives to work in us so that we become more and more like Jesus. Living Luminaries: Constraining Ourselves to Christ (Philippians 2:12-16)

What’s up with Paul? What’s his story? Come on—he’s in jail. And he’s writing about joy and rejoicing in the midst of suffering? In his own discomfort he could have thought, It’s not fair. It’s not right. I deserve better treatment. How does he do It? What’s his secret? How is it that he can calmly encourage the Philippian followers of Jesus to imitate Christ while dealing with their own suffering (refer to Philippians 1:29-30)? Pastor Evan sheds light on Paul’s “secret” by closely examining some simple concepts in Paul’s letter (chapter 2 of Philippians) on how to conduct oneself in a godly manner during difficult times: be of one mind (v2), stay focused on Jesus (vv 3-4), stay humble (vv3-4, 8), maintain a Christlike attitude (vv 5-7), die to self (vv3-4, 6-8). Evan reminds us that it is not all about me and my comfort. It’s about being Jesus to others.

Suffering, Self, And Self-Control. (Philippians 1:29-30)

In response to the concerns of many of us as to how we can help our families, friends, and neighbors who have been affected by the current fires, Pastor Evan takes us to the Old Testament book of Nehemiah. He presents the cupbearer to the king of Persia (Nehemiah 1:11) as an example of how we can be Jesus to others who are experiencing devastating loss. As soon as Nehemiah hears reports of the damage to Jerusalem’s wall and the burning of its gates (v 3), he weeps and mourns and fasts and prays before the God of heaven (vv 4-11). After some time, he asks for and receives permission from the king to return to Jerusalem to help his people (2:4-8). Once he has returned to Jerusalem, he inspects the damaged walls (vv 13-15), assesses what is needed to repair them, and rallies the people to help with the restoration (vv 17-18), all the while knowing that “the good hand of God was upon [him]” (v8). Chapter 3 comprises a detailed list of the people who bond with one another to restore the wall. Evan encourages us to follow Nehemiah’s example by keeping in mind that everything matters to God and that we are not alone. He entreats us to pray, keep in mind that others’ needs are more important than our own, stay calm, and be compassionate, flexible, and ready to help in whatever way God leads us. Evan also offers some specific ways that parents can help their children through this unexpected disruption to their young lives.

A Cupbearers Passion, Compassion, And Action (Nehemiah 1:13-18)

Pastor Evan takes a fresh look at the events leading up to the death of Jesus in Mark 15: 10-40. It was out of envy that the chief priests brought Jesus to Pilate to be killed, and they stirred up the crowd to mock and accuse Jesus. In the same way today, we can be swayed by the momentum of the many voices of the world that can lead us away from Jesus. We may be harboring envy in our hearts, or we may be unknowingly mocking others, but these actions ultimately lead us and others away from God. Let us not grow weary of doing good. Let us stay vigilant to stand against any voices, confusion, and philosophies of the world that raise themselves above Jesus, who offers forgiveness to all who seek him.

Jesus&#39; Voice Above The Confusion (Mark 15:10-40)

Continuing his study of the significant events in Mark chapter 14 preceding Jesus’s crucifixion, Pastor Evan Brown looks at the betrayal (vv 43-50) and arrest (vv 53-65) of Jesus. He poses two questions: (1) What can each of us personally learn about how Jesus conducts Himself throughout this extremely stressful time? and (2) How can we apply to our own lives what we’ve learned about following the fundamental principles about Kingdom life as we seek God’s will? Evan emphasizes how Jesus deals with the mob and His interrogators who are basing their decisions on false testimony (verses 53-65). He offers practical ways that we can prepare in advance to make wise decisions when possibly finding ourselves in situations in which we might disagree with others’ decisions that we consider to be unfair and ungodly. A key component is maintaining self-control. (You may also want to refer to last week’s teaching on Colossians 3:12-14.)

Are We Reflecting Jesus? (Mark 14:22-42)

In today's story from Mark 14 (vs 10-21), Pastor Evan Brown establishes that there are 2 groups of people who are serving God's purposes in this passage of scripture. There was the practical homeowner who responded to a prompting from the Holy Spirit to prepare his empty room for whomever needed it and then there were the disciples who were sent to meet a stranger with a water pitcher who would lead them to the homeowner with the (now fully furnished and prepared) empty room! Imagine the surprise of both the homeowner and the disciples when they put the pieces of the puzzle together and figured out how the Lord had prompted and instructed them both, and purposed for this last supper to be a significant time in Jesus' ministry. We get to follow the same patterns today, as we are willing to follow the promptings of the Lord. God wants to fill and use the empty rooms/spaces in our hearts in this time!

Following The Lord's Promptings (Mark 14: 10-21)

People have questions. People want answers. Pastor Evan offers insight on the unique way that Jesus answers questions the religious leaders ask Him in their attempts to discredit Him by challenging His authority to do “these things” (Mark 11:27-28). Knowing that these leaders do not really want answers but are testing Him, Jesus responds by asking them His own question (vv 29-30) that stumps them to the point at which they admit that they do not know (vv 31-33). Evan then examines some additional examples in Chapter 12 of how Jesus navigates answering the religious leaders’ questions about the law. The chapter begins with Jesus telling a parable that confirms His God-given authority over the religious leaders’ man-made authority (vv 1-12). It goes on to relate the religious leaders’ further attempts to entrap Jesus (v 13) by questioning Him regarding paying taxes (vv 14-15a), marriage in the resurrection (vv 18-23), and which commandment is the greatest (v 28). Jesus again responds by asking these leaders what Evan refers to as unanswerable questions (vv 15b-17, 24-27, 29-33), causing Jesus’s inquisitors to ultimately stop asking questions altogether (v 34). Jesus then continues to teach in the temple, asking His own trick question about the son of David (vv 35-37), warning His followers about the hypocrisy of the scribes (vv 38-40), and commenting on the difference between how the rich and the poor widow bring their offerings to the Lord (vv 41-44). Our assignment is to follow Jesus, our Anchor, and stay focused on Him and His wisdom, peace, and presence, and not on the world.

Warnings Against Hypocrisy (Mark 11:1-44)

In three different, yet interwoven episodes, Jesus explains to the disciples and the Pharisees what consequence even the smallest degree of separation has: it leads to divorce in marriage, it leads to disengagement when children are kept away from Jesus, and for the rich young man: his possessions (or for us today: any kind of entanglement) caused him to not follow Jesus. Let's remember that Jesus said: what God has joined together, let no man separate. Jesus has joined Himself to us; it behooves us to separate (divorce) ourselves from our old ways of life to join ourselves to Him! Forgiveness is the mechanism that brings what was separated back together.

As our world today continues to wrestle through uncertainty as a result of the COVID-19 crisis, and we encounter needs beyond what has been seen in our lifetime, we can be used by God to intercede, support and pray for others so that they come to know the God who loves them and has all power and authority to bring hope and life in the midst of darkness. Humanity will not be able to solve all the problems of the world through human means. Yet we can go, on behalf of others, to the One who has all power, authority, and knowledge; and his name is Jesus.

All Power, Authority, And Knowledge. (Mark 4:31 - 5:43)

After giving some helpful and significant announcements, Pastor Evan explains that this week he will address how each of us, personally, can respond to the COVID-19 situation (last week he spoke on how we, as church, respond to the radically changed circumstances of our lives). In Psalm 46:2 it says ~Therefore we will not fear though the earth should change, because God is our refuge. The question Pastor Evan poses is: How do I run into God as my refuge? The (rhetorical) question King David asks in 2 Samuel 22: 32 is this: Who is a rock, besides the Lord? During this time our "rocks" (whatever we lean on to give us safety and security) will prove to be no refuge or shield! Only the Lord can be to us what a parent is to a child that wakes up from a nightmare... so run to Him and bury your head in His chest and listen to the words He will whisper into your ear. Let's consider this time of "shelter in place" as a gift to be still (Psalm 46:10) and know that God is God.
