You can be Confident! - Today, I want to remind you: You’ve been rescued! 
  
Years ago, my sister “Cuqui” (her real name is Lizette) rescued my siblings and me. A group of tough boys determined to break into our apartment via our fire escape window and beat us up. We were terrified! We lived in the South Bronx, and this gang harassed us daily. 
  
That afternoon, my mother and two brothers were at work, so our 19-year-old sister was left to fight for us little ones. She sat at the windowsill, looking down and yelling at the angry mob climbing up the ladder. She did her best to discourage them from approaching our window. She threw down books, boots, and anything heavy we could find in our tiny apartment and eventually poured hot water over the gangsters. One of them got angrier and made it to the top of the stairs, but my sister’s adrenaline-pumped fear and the buckle side of a belt on her hand sent him back down the ladder whimpering. From that day, my sister became my hero. She risked her life for ours! My sister rescued me from a momentary situation, but Jesus rescued me (and you) from an eternal one. 
  
In today’s reading, King David’s perspective of the Lord’s power to deliver inspires him to declare the hope of the Lord’s vindication. He proclaims the Divine Warrior’s victory. God will triumphantly subdue the enemies. They had planned to destroy the righteous, but the Lord will bring them down to the lowest parts of the earth. GOD’S JUSTICE WILL PREVAIL! 
  
Therefore, though evil seems to be winning the day, David is confident enough to express JOY! The king will rejoice in God.  He will be happy, praise and even boast in the Lord.  
  
The deception of the enemy will once and for all be silenced! 
  
Think of a time when you were rescued by another person and name a few attributes of that person. Did you think of courage, selflessness, strength, or boldness? Totally! Jesus gave it all for us. He conquered our greatest enemy, death. 
  
Are you frustrated? Do you feel weak? Are you discouraged? Does it seem like the “enemy” is winning? Remember. You’ve been rescued by the almighty God, King of kings, Lord of lords, Creator of the universe. Nothing can snatch you from his hands. 
  
Even if you are in the middle of a fire, you feel weak or in trial or pain…God’s faithful love is worth more than gold. It is better than life.  
  
Don’t measure God by your circumstances. Measure your circumstances by your Almighty God. 
In this time of trouble, stand in your confidence that the LORD is victorious. He will put the enemy to shame, and before the Lord, every knee will bow before the LORD, and every tongue will acknowledge GOD.

You can be Confident! Let Me Tell You Why - Devotional on Psalm 63:9-11

Even if you are going through a hard time, God is present with you. King David had a lot of responsibility and experienced many difficult struggles. In Psalm 63, he models how he brought peace to his heart. He focused his mind on God during the "watches of the night." He was aware of the dangers around him and remembered how God had helped him in the past. David uses a military metaphor to explain his posture toward threats and his dependence on God. In David's time, the twelve-hour "night watch" was divided into four-hour blocks. This allowed for much-needed rest for most of the soldiers while a few kept an eye out for threats. David remembers the LORD's past acts and draws comfort during the "night" when the shadows of adversity haunt him. David's alertness and dependence on God not only benefited him personally but also the entire nation of Israel. 
  
As king, David was responsible for the safety and well-being of his people, and he took that responsibility seriously. He was always on the lookout for potential threats, and he trusted in God to protect him and his people from their enemies. And instead of only singing after God helps him, David sings while he waits for the Lord's help. He sings with anticipation. God has helped him in the past, and he will help David again. 
God has helped you in the past, and he will help you again. Remember God's kindness toward you in the past. Remember what he has already done for you. Remember his mighty acts, the many ways he has shown up in your life. The enemy wants you to forget all of that. He wants you to question God's goodness, especially when you feel weak.  
  
GOD DOES NOT CHANGE. Once good to you, God is always good to you. 
  
You can rest in the "shadow of his wings." The Lord has promised to be close to his own, but he also expects his children to draw close to him, to seek his help and support. No matter the size and force of your "storm," no matter the challenge, lift your hands in faith and dependence on God. His love will rescue you. 
  
Cling to God as he upholds you with his strong right hand.

The Kindness of God's Love - Devotional on Psalm 63:6-8

Today we chat about healing broken relationships. Have you lost a relationship or experienced a painful breakup lately? Have you lost a friend? Are you disconnected from one of your children or from your parents? I’m so sorry. I’m praying for you to experience God’s comfort and healing in Jesus’s name. 
  
The path to healing begins by our willingness and eagerness to FIRST go to God or return to God. The “God of all comfort” will attend to our wounds, disappointments, and fears. It is then we can begin to heal broken relationships. 
 
God does not promise that we will not have difficult relationships. He does not guarantee that others will not hurt or disappoint us. The One who was rejected, betrayed, spit upon, and beaten promises to be with us, walk with us, and heal us. 
 
Relationships are complex, but God’s posture is singular: love. 
  
“No one has greater love than this: to lay down his life for his friends.” John 15:13

Grace is such a beautiful gift, and we see it over and over again throughout the Bible. 
  
If God, the only all-powerful, all-knowing, and perfectly holy being, has “removed our sins as far from us as the east is from the west,” then why are we so adamant about holding on to our sin – or the sin of others against us? 
  
Could it be that we are still trying to earn our keep and prove our worthiness by continually recognizing our failures? Could it be that we don’t believe a good God could truly forgive us, so we have chosen not to forgive ourselves either? Could it be that we do not trust in God’s holiness, justice, and goodness? 
  
Many of us, in order to live free, need to let go of our desire for revenge and extend grace.

The Benefit of Grace - Devotional on Genesis 33:1-4 and Romans 5:20-21

Does hot passionate love just happen to people? Does it come about by chance? Does love wear off?You’re just going about your business, and wham, love shows up?! No, I don’t believe it does. 
  
Sure. One can experience a high level of physical attraction to another (lust) and a sense that our personalities match very well (compatibility). We can feel the “butterflies” and become obsessed with someone else (infatuation). But to be passionate lovers in relationship for a long time, to experience a mature love, takes intentionality. Infatuation wears off, idealization fades, and challenges are sure to come. And if there is nothing substantive beneath the heat, the relationship will come to an end. 
  
Romantic love must be pursued. That is because we must break past a shallow understanding of the other person to build attachment, care about their wellbeing, and feel safe enough to share our inner self in intimacy. 
  
The early days of a relationship may be likely filled with excitement and intensity. But, as trust, contentment, and intimacy are built with one another, the couple reaches a compassionate love that is longer lasting and more profound. 
  
This devotional is not about marriage. Whether you are single, dating, or married, I hope today’s devotional reminds you to be intentional and prayerful about your intimate relationships.

Does Love Wear Off? - Devotional on Genesis 24:56-58

Take a good look at yourself. How are you doing today? Are you spiritually full – topped off? Or are you running on less than a full tank, a little low, or maybe empty – hearing alarm bells? 
  
None of us like to be spiritually empty, and God does not want that for us either. 
  
When we run low on spiritual nourishment, we are likely to feel detached from God. In that parched state, making good choices becomes harder. We can easily fall prey to temptations or the enemy's tactics. We might even start doubting God's goodness and faithfulness. Our insecurities, temper, and discouragement raise their volume. When we're that thirsty spiritually, it's tempting to fill up with stuff, pleasure, and addictive escape mechanisms. 
 
To be spiritually full is to be strengthened by the Holy Spirit, to be secure of our identity in Christ, to be confident of God's love, and to be filled to the max with all the fullness of God! – kept full, never running out. 
  
To be spiritually full is to be strong, fruitful, and joyful. When we are spiritually full, it's easier to be wise, generous, kind, gentle, self-controlled, at peace, and loving, even to our enemies! It's wonderful to be spiritually full. WONDERFUL. 
 
The two men walking to Emmaus in Luke 24 were running on empty spiritually. They had lost their hope and were discouraged: "But we were hoping that he was the one..." (Luke 24:21) 
  
"Then beginning with Moses and all the Prophets, he interpreted for them the things concerning himself in all the Scriptures." Luke 24:27 
  
This is how Jesus meets them in their disappointment. This is how he fills their hearts. He redirects their mind to himself, to the promises in Scriptures about him, to the goodness, mercy, and purposes of God the Father. 
  
Such is their nourishment that when they arrive at their destination, they don't want Jesus to leave them. They urge Jesus, "Stay with us…" (Luke 24:29).

Jesus Stays with You  - Devotional on Luke 24:13-35

Have you ever been in a huge crowd of people (probably before COVID) yet felt invisible to others? Unless you’re in an embarrassing situation or were trying to hide from someone or something, the feeling of being overlooked is not pleasant. We all hate being an outcast. It’s hard on our hearts to be physically present and yet not seen by others. At the same time, we are all a little afraid of being fully seen, for we know that there is a part of ourselves that, if people knew, may cause people to reject us or wish us gone. 
 
It’s fascinating to me that one of the superpowers of comic heroes is invisibility. A better superpower would be to be fully seen but never harmed. That is what Jesus offers us. The story of Jesus coming for Peter in LOVE, knowing all of Peter’s faults, insecurities, and mistakes is very encouraging and hopeful. 
  
Peter denied Jesus. Yet, Jesus sees Peter and still loves him, provides for him, shares a meal with him, and entrusts him with a mission. 
  
Today, I want to remind YOU that JESUS SEES YOU, all of who you are, and JESUS LOVES YOU. You probably know this or heard it thousands of times. But today, let it sink in. Deep.
